Here is a customer's request that was so compelling, I had to make two! Hermes masks.

Hermes is the great messenger of the gods in Greek mythology and additionally a guide to the Underworld. An Olympian god, he is also the patron of boundaries and of the travelers who cross them, of shepherds and cowherds, of the cunning of thieves, of orators and wit, of literature and poets, of athletics and sports, of weights and measures, of invention, and of commerce in general. He is often depicted with winged shoes and a helm or cap with wings on it.

For this mask, I decided to keep it simple; big dramatic bronze wings on a fairly plain half mask. To tie in with the Greek God thing, I designed a border of Greek key patterns for the upper and lower edges of the mask.

I had to do two, because I couldn't decide how I wanted to shape it. One has wings that flare outward, the other has wings that stay back and close to the sides. The colors, carving, patterns and size of the masks are identical otherwise.

As ever, this is hand-carved, hand-shaped 8oz leather. Painted with Liquitex acrylics in bright bronze and jet black.
