Description Well, I have been playing with snake patterns and here's another experiment: my half (snoutless) dragon design with a black, silver & pewter corn snake pattern.

Many thanks for the nice Deviant who sent me those cool corn snake links (sorry...I remember your icon but I forgets your name! *is old* ).

As ever, this is leather, hand tooled & hand shaped, painted with Liquitex acrylics. The layers I used to do this pattern...it'd just confuse you all if I tried to explain it.

I love the patterns in this one
Do you freehand the scales or do you use a tool?

You continually amaze me with your skill and creativity. As if the careful scales and texture weren't enough, you give it even more depth and intense realism with the patterning. The extra little details in the molding - the slight twists of the cheek frills and ears - suggest movement and life which is often absent in most of the masks I've seen. I'm thrilled to see the snake-pattern motif carrying over from your exquisite medusas into the draconic masks. Thank you for being kind enough to share your passion and flair with us.

Thanks so much.

The thicker leather is great for making hard twists and curls. I can get dynamic shapes that I know will reliably remain sturdy enough to wear. It's a great sculpting medium...you just have to be aware of the shaping limitations due to the thickness & work around it by adding carved details to suggest more intricacy.

You're very welcome. I'm always excited to see what new ideas you've come up with. They're just fascinating.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you get started with leather working?

I just encountered a King Snake on my front steps the this past week! After the mini heart attack was over, I marveled at his really simple and beautiful patterning of black splotches with white rings. That sort of natural patterning works so well when transferred to leather! These snake dragon masks just look stunning and have that rustic natural mood to them.

Plus that's two awesome designs in one! I'd love to see you tackle a Coral Snake [link]

Eeep! Yeah, I think snakes are beautiful but um...not too close. If they're poisonous anyway. When I was a kid I used to catch the little garter snakes for fun 'cause I was crazy like that.

This design has quickly become my favorite of your dragon masks. I LOVE the color pallet, it makes it look very sophisticated (on top of it being beautiful already)!

Thank you. Black and silver and white together always looks "formal" to me too, so it was my first choice for a metallic snake pattern.

The first time you did a snake pattern on a dragon mask I didn't know if I liked it or not. But each time I look at this mask I like it more
It is fitting ^^ Great idea

Thank you. I have to say I think the snake pattern works better on a simple mask like this one. The Great Serpentine design is a bit busy...obscures the natural pattern.

Falkenkralle In reply to merimask [2010-05-17 20:34:00 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that was probably it. Also, the color of the snake pattern fits to the color of the horns here. The contrast between the shades of brown and the black was a little much in the Great Serpentine design. Anyway, I love seeing how you develop new designs or change old ones. It never gets boring watching you!

The detail of the scales is incredible. Must have been really time consuming. I love the muted colours, it works really well for this mask.

Keep it up!

This is nice. The realistic snake-patterns are a refreshing break from the usual dragon fare (not yours - yours always manages to be interesting; I'm talking about dragon art in general ), and this particular combination of silver, grey and black works really well.

... These masks have the cutest ears.

Thank you. I've always thought the best fantasy art has a touch of reality in it...makes something fantastical seem...more "possible", IMO. So I'm surprised I didn't try this snake idea earlier!

Agorphia [2010-05-12 03:14:06 +0000 UTC]

I don't know why I didn't realize to ask you this a long time ago, but how do you get the lines in the horns? Do you use a tool to make the lines perfectly straight before shaping the horns?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

merimask In reply to Agorphia [2010-05-12 21:52:36 +0000 UTC]

Nope, I just...carve these lines. Since they're twisted, it's not so important to get them straight. More important to have them equi-distant from each other, which I just sort of do by eye.

It's gorgeous. By the way, the snake pattern that fascinates me most is that of an African puff adder. Just throw that into Google images and you'll see some stunning scale coloration... I still have to make a bead pattern from it one of these days...

Ooo...that's a beautiful brown-patterned snake. O_O I just printed out a nice pic of the head. For reference.

I really like the snoutless design for the dragon masks. The pattern around the eyes, especially, seems almost Egyptian, in a way.

Hmm... I wonder how an Egyptian Cobra pattern would look on one of these? It might be pretty tough, they've got tricky patterns to pull off.

merimask In reply to MadameRuby [2010-05-11 01:50:34 +0000 UTC]

I looked it up...that IS a pretty snake! I bet I could do one, though the cool part is the hood & that wouldn't be part of a mask.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MadameRuby In reply to merimask [2010-05-11 02:04:14 +0000 UTC]

Maybe the inside patterning of the hood, just underneath the head? Just a suggestion. I bet it'd look nice, either way.
