Excellent model! Great work on the hilt. Sorry if my sword terminology isn't very accurate, but I'll try. How did you do the material wrappings on the handle? That looks awesome, and seems like it would be a real challenge to model. Do you have a wireframe I can look at? This is really good.

Thank you. The hilt wrapping, or tsukamaki, was modelled as a plane then had a shell modifier applied to add thickness. The trickiest part was the UV mapping I think! You can see a wireframe render here: Wireframe

Wow. The topology is very clean, and logical. I'm still not sure the procedure in turning a plane into that. I would have guessed it started as either a spline mesh or cylinder. Interesting.

You start out with a single quad plane and then extrude out the edges around the hilt until you have the shape you want. The shell modifier just solidifies the mesh by giving it sides and a back based on what you've already modelled. It's fast and simple and is pretty much the same technique you would use to wrap the tsukamaki in real life.
