Description Somewhere in the multiverse, Elric is a magical girl and Arioch is Kyubey...

After ~dkmsart made a comment about Kyubei being Arioch, I couldn't get this idea out of my head. Of course, they end up being nothing alike, but I still like the idea. XD

A quickie to nail down the designs/colors for a much more elaborate image to come...

Ah, wrong Elric.  XD  This is the guy the alchemists are named after.  He's the main character of a series of 1970s fantasy fiction, a doomed hero of sorts, so I thought turning him into a Puella Magi was fitting.  ^_^;

Awesome pic, but Arioch is a lord of chaos and Kyubey/the Incubators, seem to be a an incarnation of order, with their fight against entropy, even if they are completely amoral. Then again, Arkyn is kind-off an Order lord incarnation of Arioch, who says there can't a another one...

Like I said in the artist's comments, Kyubey did end up being nothing like Arioch at all, it was just a fun idea. Another commenter mentioned that Kyubey was more like Stormbringer in that he ate grief seeds, which were the corrupted souls of the magical girls - a view I find interesting. He doesn't really have a simple or clear analog in the Eternal Champion universe, so there could be quite a bit of debate about it. I admit to taking some liberties with the mythology to make a more appealing picture. ^_^;

I also find the different interpretations of Kyubey very interesting. I personally view him as a neutral being, who was simply doing whatever it took to keep the universe alive, creating pure chaos with the magical girls on a planetary scale, but doing so to fight against entropy on a universal scale. I can definitely see your point of view, as well. And people who aren't used to thinking in terms of law or chaos tend to find him just plain evil, though I think the only evil tendency he had was conveniently forgetting to tell the girls the truth about what they were getting into. But even that can be chalked up to his alien thought patterns. Kyubey is an interesting being, indeed.

Sorry that I make this a string of comments, but an another interesting fact is that in final episode Kyubey seemed to display emotion, to precise shock and/or fear when Madoka made her wish.( his qoute "That violates the laws of cause and effect! Do you really want to become a god!?", the first time he ever rises his voice , I think
 This may be explained, in that Madoka's wish was so alien, that it broke the incubators mind, as his kind thinks of emotion as an mental illness.

Heh, I misspelled 'psychopathy' as 'psychpathy' for some reason...

   Hi, it's me again, sorry that I'm replying so much later, but some books, and experiences, and the new Rebellion movie made me reconsider a few things about Kyubey and the Incubators. I started to see a disturbing similarity between some forms of psychpathy, and the Incubators, as both are unable to feel emotions, and don't really have conscience. Many psychopaths are surprisingly, and be extremely well adjusted, many don't have homicidal urges, just are completely amoral, or feel completely justified in what they doing. The fact that the Incubators regard emotions as a mental illness, reminds me of an observation, that if a group of insane people outnumbers the 'sane' ones, the labels and control switch. It makes me wonder if the incubators were a species were 'psychpathy'/emotionless was a norm during their evolution of intelligence, or did they have an dominant emotion-feeling populace, before the emotionless took control.

    The incubators also seem to me less intelligent that they think and make them selves, because of Kyubey's complete shock at Madoka's final wish in the series, his 'awe' for the lack of better term, at the possibly universe destroying(or at least a possible birth of a planet-eater/destroyer, similar to Unicron, Galactus, and Lavos) final Kriemhild Gretchen. Not to mention he and the other Incubators were in the end of the new movie completely outsmarted(but I won't tell if this is a good, or a bad thing), to not spoil to much if you didn't watch it.

    That they may not be so extremely above humanity in their intellectual capabilities, just much, much more developed technologically and older. Many historical human civilizations considered other tribes to be much below them, or even being  animals compared to them, so this may, or may not be a similar situation.

This is really interesting!  I like the idea that they've "evolved" away from having emotions by eliminating those of the species with that "weakness."  So even though they view the universe on a very wide scale from a very neutral perspective, the incubators only gained that perspective through violence and basically genocide.  Even more interesting is the idea that, maybe there are still Incubators with emotions, but they hide them in order to avoid persecution.  Heh, now I want to see a series about the Incubators!

the Kyubey hive mind don't talk about Erica von Bek. It/they don't talk about how her wish granted her a life draining black sword and it/they don't talk about how she turned it against Kyuby and it/they don't talk about how one of them was slain, utterly destroyed by the black blade. And deffently don't talk about what the experienced that day.
After all Kyuby don't feel emotion so they can not have... felt... fear

For some reason I have a much easier time imagining guy characters as these Magical Girls. Maybe because it's funnier? It just seems to work out that way. XD

This is cute, so this is an OC from the Magica anime? I keep hearing about it and sort of want to check it out.

Merowynn In reply to kuroitenshi13 [2011-06-02 21:37:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's more of a parody character than an OC... Elric is the anti-hero protagonist of a series of novels by Michael Moorcock, and he's known for contracting with loads of demons/dukes of hell for power. In Madoka, the girls contract with Kyubey - he grants them one wish, and they become magical girls to fight for him. The parallel was too good to pass up. XD

As for Madoka Magica, I highly recommend it. It's a very unique take on the magical girl genre, and it's one of the best anime I've seen in quite a while. It's also only 12 episodes, so it doesn't require a huge commitment!

Yeah, I keep hearing it, I just need to find it where it doesn't require me to download it.

I don't know if you'll be able to, since it's brand new... I'm not sure if it's all been collected on DVD in Japan yet. I could burn it on some DVDs and mail it to you, but you'd still have to watch it on the computer because of formatting. That's actually how I got it; a friend burned it for me for my birthday. XD

You can watch it on streaming sites, too (unless the download problem is a bandwith problem, in which case, of course, it wouldn't help). That's what I did. I'll get the series on DVD as soon as it's out anyway. ^^

Elric is the last emperor of Melniboné in a series of books by Michael Moorcock.
Of course, originally he's a guy.
