Description acrylics and oils (thickened with linseed stand oil) on canvas with gesso for texture.

i was having a conversation with about transparency and opacity and i was inspired to use a combination of acrylics and oils, which i've never done before. i thought the effect was kind of cool.

Wow, this looks amazing! I love the texture effect. Ever since I started painting with acrylics (about three weeks ago, hehe), I've been itching to mix them with oils. Haven't tried it yet, but after seeing what you've done, I'm certainly going to try!

You know how much I love textured paintings! Really takes me back to painting over tissue paper, lots of fun! But really interesting that you can get this texture from thickening paints.

actually, i think it would be really tough to get that much texture from just paint and it wouldn't be so smooth looking. the texture is from gesso that i applied to the canvas, let it dry and then painted over it. it's one of the best ways to get a whole lot of texture. you should give it a try! it's quite cheap and so easy to work with!

Ah right cool, thanks for the tip! Do you let the gesso dry first before painting?

thanks! how come you removed that deviation from ?

i thought you had submitted it to the wrong folder and i forgot to move it to line art for coloring. i thought that was what you intended. if you don't want anybody else working on your work and changed your mind, that's totally fine!

oh i didn't mean that i didn't want your art for the group, some of the members (and i sort of like to think i am) are quite good at coloring complicated art. but that's entirely up to you. did you see the recent coloring contest i had in that group? there were some pretty remarkable entries.

Thanks for the offer , but i think I will decline. Too sentimental with my art.

thank you sooo much! the texture is actually gesso under the paint, so it is a structure and not impasto. i've only recently learned about using gesso that way but it's soooo cool!

gesso is a white acrylic goop that comes in thicker and thinner versions. all bought canvases are already primed with it. it gives more tooth to the canvas. but you can use it as a base, a way to create texture. i just dump loads on the canvas in a random pattern and manipulate it with a brush or palette knife, etc. the next day, cause i've put on a whole lot, it's about 1/2 way dry and much thicker, then i manipulate it a little more, make peaks with my fingers, push it around with the brush, stuff like that.
it adds so much interest to the painting. do you paint?

That sounds fun and interesting I paint very little - I don't think it even qualifies as "I paint a little" hee hee

yes, that is one wild effect! dimensional, glossy, a bit iridescent (?), and chalkier-looking white around the edges. Did you have any trouble combining them, or did you apply one over the other?

merpagigglesnort In reply to janinelevin [2011-04-08 22:14:25 +0000 UTC]

the glossy iridescence comes from the linseed oil. don't know if you use it, oh, i think maybe you use acryics, i'm feeling my age, i can't remember! lol! so all the bright colors are oils and the clouds/frame/weird effect is acrylic. it's actually light blue, but i just couldn't get it to photograph that way. i had great natural light and i tried about a million times and places, lol! dunno...i only mixed the two kinds of paint in a tiny bit--where the light color melts over the "rainbow."maybe the light blue was just too transparent. i realized how much more i liked oils. i've only been painting in acrylics a little while. i think i'll try some more mixing stuff. and i want to buy more oils. thanks for the inspiration!

also have you used acrylic gloss medium with your acrylics? It will give it some oil-like properties. glad to be an inspiration, though i deny having any inspirational qualities at all.

shhh interesting that you should mention, because i have the gloss stuff that came with a big set of paints. i've never tried it yet. i will now. that's a cool prospect!
