Neci stared furiously at her feet, ashamed of herself, but at the same time, too stubborn to admit that she was in the wrong. Why was it her fault? They were the ones who had let the dragon into the village in the first place, not her. No one had tried to comfort her when Chase had died. They couldn’t even find the body, it was buried under so much wood . . .

Her thoughts broke off as Turkish darted close and threw his arms around her neck. She protested, growling as she tried to push him away, only to feel something slide around her neck. She stopped, confused, and as the Eevee stepped back, she looked down and touched a claw to what Ruben had tied there.

It was a choker of some sort; a pale green, with a bow tied on it, and a silver bell in the middle. That’s what she had head tinkling – the bell. Her blue eyes looked up, confused. “What’s this?”

“I said I had heard that one of your leaders was giving away presents to those who have lost someone,” Turkish said simply, the smile, for once, gone from his face. “I didn’t come with nothin’. I picked that up from one of the shops for you. I remember how down you were when you came to me before. I knew that you wouldn’t have changed in such short a time.

“Neci, you can’t keep blaming others for what happened. It’s not their fault, and it’s not your fault. Things happen, and you can’t always stop them. You have to stop pushing away the people that love you – they’re only trying to help. Try to remember that for me, okay? In fact, remember for Chase.”
