Description

The first flagship of the Argentine Navy, the Frigate Hercules had a very eventful run. Built in Russia and originally named Legkii (Lightweight) the ship was surrendered to France in 1809 in Trieste, where it was sold to the Kingdom of Naples, who then sold it to the British and renamed to Duke of Palma. In British service it would see action against American privateers on several occasions.

In 1813 the ship was bought by the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata and given the name Hercules. During this time the Irish-born captain William Brown captured the ship, and used it in Argentina's war of independence against Spain (1810-1818) where it would ultimately be used to help take Montevideo from loyalists to the Spanish Crown.
