Description 'Admit it, you were ALL thinking the same thing!'

Well, it is official. Telltale's Batman game was a success,
as it now has a sequel that was released recently entitled: "Batman: The Enemy Within."

And, guess who the main villain appears to be?
None other than our "favorite" arrogant, narcissistic, puzzle obsessed jackass: Edward Nygma, AKA The Riddler.

(sigh) and, here I thought we could have one Batman WITHOUT any Riddler Challenges..

Now, make no mistake. I am not complaining here. (mostly)
but, to anyone who found Riddler so annoyingly grating in the Arkham Series..

GET READY. You haven't seen anything, yet.

because Riddler Challenges in a Telltale Game where you CANNOT afford to make any mistakes
(Remember, this game 'remembers' your actions, which can lead to different outcomes.
So, unlike in Batman: Arkham, you DON'T get a do-over.)

either you do his puzzles right the first time..or, suffer the consequences.

But, seriously. if I so much as see ONE Riddler Trophy in this game..

I actually loved the Riddler! I agree that the Riddler trophies are a F*CKING NIGHTMARE but the character overall is awesome. In case you don't know, the Riddler is my favourite Batman villain.

Yes, I know. and, I had a feeling this would get your attention.

So, 1. How do you like the Telltale Batman series as a whole??
(If I've already asked this, then tell me again. It bears repeating.)

and, 2. If you've seen any game footage on YouTube,
How do you like THIS version of Riddler??

I absolutely loved the Telltale take on Batman. Batman is my favourite superhero and I love Telltale Games because of the interactive gameplay style like Life is Strange and Until Dawn. Playing as Batman by making choices and doing interactions in the world of Batman is literally my dream Batman game. I always wanted to play as this dark and brutal Punisher-like Batman, while being this kind and boy scout Bruce Wayne. So yes, I think it is among one of my favourite games ever or at least an honorable mention. I loved how they twisted Bruce Wayne's story arc by making his parents crime lords (Or at least his father. His mother seemed more like the one caught in the crossfire) and it was just an awesome experience. I especially loved the detective analyses moments and while I am not a Batman x Catwoman shipper (You know I am a WonderBat shipper) I feel this was a well written romance arc between Bruce and Selina.

For 2, I haven't seen any footage except the trailers which announced that The Wolf Among Us will also be getting a Season Two which is awesome! So anyway, I haven't seen any footage except the trailers and immediately played the game when it became available for purchase after I learned that the Riddler was going to be a major antagonist in this. How did I feel about this version of the Riddler? Well, I suppose I would say I would call this the best version of the Riddler if they hadn't killed him off so damn quick. I loved how he was a skilled fighter, like in the show The Batman, and was so similar to Jigsaw from the Saw franchise. I didn't really like the hood on the suit. It looked a little silly and off. For a second, I thought he was Green Arrow in the trailers. The voice acting was good but like I said, his costume was really distracting with the hood. So far, unless they bring this guy back, I am going to say that the Arkham Franchise version of the Riddler is the best, even if he does force you to collect his freaking trophies!

Batman DOES seem to work with Telltale's decision-based gaming formula.
(and, unlike Arkham Knight. they've EARNED their 'M' rating.)

I did note some details inspired by the prior Arkham games,
as well as some things similiar to 'Batfleck', and even the old Batman film serials.

It was also bold to reimagine Thomas Wayne as a criminal
(although, I feel there is more yet to be revealed on that in season two.)

THEN AGAIN..when Thomas Wayne was Batman,
he wasn't the most "restrained" crime fighter ever..

Telltale's Batman is great in it's own way.
It isn't imitating Batman: Arkham, and that is a good thing.

Unlike Rocksteady, Telltale made Bruce Wayne just as important as Batman.
Making players actually choose between facing situations as either Bruce, or Batman.

I agree. The Batman: Arkham series really just feels like a video game adaption of a Batman movie. With the Telltale version, you get to actually BE Batman AND Bruce Wayne.

Yeah, Thomas Wayne was pretty much the Punisher in Flashpoint.

MetroXLR In reply to Daviddv1202 [2017-09-07 21:54:30 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but to be fair. Thomas' motivations carried more weight than Bruce's.

Bruce lost his parents, but was raised by Alfred.
Thomas lost his son, and his wife when insane as a result.

It's no surprise Thomas has more anger than Bruce,
and has no restraint, nor patience with Gotham's criminals.

The fact that in Flashpoint, he owned a Casino may've inspired Telltale a bit
when they made Thomas out to be a crime lord in that regard.

STILL. despite that, Alfred may've still be truthful
when he said earlier in Seasone One, Ep. 1: "You're father DESPISED men like Falcone."

Because let's face it: Even other gangsters didn't get along with each other.

That's why in Gotham, there were always gang wars. Even though Riddler and Penguin were best friends and potential love interests, they eventually turned against each other and tried to kill each other. Villains don't work together. Sure, they could come to a short term agreement and form a temporary alliance but they would NEVER be friends or get along. Even in the Legion of Doom, they always watch their backs in case one of the villains may shoot them in the back.

That may be why the Legion of Doom NEED a leader like Lex Luthor (or, Vandal Savage.)
as with a team of villains, they ALL have conflicts of interest, driven by their own needs.

As a businessman, Luthor knows how to manipulate the needs of others,
and direct it towards a goal that satisfies everyone.

a simplified example of this was the "Fearsome Five" team from Darkwing Duck,
where Negaduck at times had certain villains teamed in ways that was more effective.

Mainly, the whole Megavolt/Quackerjack partnership.
as it makes sense for a 'mad toymaker' to work with a Electrokinetic,
as some of his lethal toys weapons require power to work.

Of course, Negaduck had his OWN way of keeping the villains in line: a revving chainsaw.

I've never seen Darkwing Duck. However, you make a good point with the leaders. Still, even I wouldn't trust anybody around me who is a villain.

Darkwing Duck was a classic Disney Cartoon,
that was a spinoff of Ducktales, that parodied Batman.

(I believe the pitch was: "Imagine if Batman had to raise an adoptive daughter
who was a tomboy that ALWAYS got into trouble." or something along those lines.)

Sounds like a good show. I wonder if the Nostalgia Critic ever reviews it.

he certainly mentioned it in his 'Disney Afternoon Retrospective' video.
BUT, as far as full show reviews, his done both versions of DuckTales: The original, AND the new Reboot.

One thing that I noted was that Darkwing Duck, while a parody of Batman,
also drew inspiration from The Shadow (one of Batman's influences)

Given Darkwing Duck's Fedora and Overcoat costume,
his use of (gas) guns, and theatrics way of introducing himself to criminals.

But, yes. alot of the villains were parodies.

For instance, 'Bushroot' is a half plant, half duck
that was clearly meant to be an 'insecure' male version of Poison Ivy.

Quackerjack was MEANT to be based on The Joker
(hence his harlequin costume), but due to censorship issues, was watered down
to being more of a parody of the Superman villain 'Toy Man'.

I will state this much. the Multi-part pilot 'Darkly Dawns the Duck'
had a great villain with Taurus Bulba, a Lex Luthor/Kingpin-like bull
who even while in prison, was STILL managing his criminal empire.

(In fact, he somehow built his own airship WITHIN the prison.
transforming his cell into an office in secret, and eventually destroying
the prison once he decided the charade was no longer needed, and rose his airship up.

In his words: "It's a shame to abandon a hideout as PERFECT as a Prison.")

Also, he was voiced by Tim Curry.

despite being just a parody, Darkwing Duck has it's own fanbase,
and has found renewed life in new comic book series..JUST like Batman.

Riddler took his "games" to a new twisted level. Its like seen Batman in the franchise of Saw

MetroXLR In reply to Zalokin [2017-09-02 20:38:04 +0000 UTC]

You kidding, Riddler predated 'Jigsaw', and the whole Saw series by decades.
(In fact, Riddler's 'Riddle Rooms' from Arkham City were comparable to the death traps in Saw.)

So, if anything "Telltale's Riddler" makes Rocksteady's version seem 'easier' to deal with.
(at least in THOSE games, Riddler gave the you option to "Go back, and RETRY.")

In THIS game, it's "Do, or DIE."

I guess you're right, i forgot his traps in Arkham City. But these ones on the second season got me the chills, even more than the ones back in AC(Arkham City).

Though, i got to admit. Even Nigma looks amazing.
