I know this is a bit old, but I was just wondering. I'm doing my comic with traditional mediums, and my handwriting isn't the easiest to read. Should I just do the artwork and then do the speech bubbles in PS or should I try to make a space for them?

Um, it might be best to experiment and see what works best! Personally, I have a HUGE problem with not leaving enough space for my dialogue, so I always write out the dialogue and position it when I'm first starting my storyboarding. If you're worried, maybe you could jot down the dialogue in your own handwriting to make sure it fits, and then redo it in PS later?

Okay, thanks for replying. This is my first comic I've done with dialogue, so I'm a little nervous, but I'll see what works

Oh my god, thank you! I've been wondering how to do this for a long time! I have trouble using shapes in Photoshop 0_0

Photoshop's shape vector tools are REALLY annoying, yeah. They baffled me for ages.

This is long overdue, but thank you for this tutorial! Helps me so much when I do the dialogues!
Also, your Alterity series is AMAZING.

Using shape layers instead of Fill Pixels, right? I'm glad you got it working!

Shape layers? Nope, just found out how to avoid making new layers for each new bubble. I have to admit though that I am slow as hell, but at least it seemed (somewhat) faster than what I was doing before.
Photoshop just seems like it has 200,000 times the amount of functions in Sai, so it's really hard to get to know it. If not for this tutorial, I wouldn't have known what buttons to even press in the first place, so I would have just gone back to Sai. Hooray for overcoming laziness though!

Yeah... Photoshop is incredibly overbuilt for something as simple as comics. A lot of people won't touch it unless they really need the special effects. Glad it's going by faster for you.

Okay, so I recently started out using Photoshop (and so far only for the speech bubbles, since I have no idea what I'm doing), and I can get the first bubble right this way, but as soon as I create the next ellipse, I end up creating a new layer entirely, and having to first make all the bubbles as completely white and then merging them afterwards to add effects on the layers as a whole, that seems sort of slow.
Is there a faster way to do that, or should I stick to this method? :V

Wich font do you think it's the most propper for a comic?

Check out Blambot for some nice free fonts designed for comics. The one I'm using for the text bubbles in this tutorial is called LetterOMatic.

And here I just used speech bubble brushes and just resized them appropriately....
Then again I am using Gimp and not Photoshop, but regardless I learned something so thank you for sharing. ^^

I was considering making a GIMP version of this! I'm pretty sure GIMP has similar features... just not in the exact same locations. I'm glad you were able to learn something!
