Description I wanted an orange chestnut horse with stripes, and I made a new breed while I was at it...

*************

About the Therinae horse breed :

Origins:

The first horse of the breed discovered was brought in Europe by smuggler and confiscated at the border. The boss of the azurro castle managed to get the horse and after research on their origin, made a trip to Asia where she found other horses of the kind in an abandoned valley bordered by great moutains, jungle florishing on the side. Horses tended to be bigger -draft type- in the center of the valley and lighter in the mountains -mustang-. They didn't have much predators, as their pelt and the sound they make make other animals believe they are predator themselves, even big cats avoid to hunt them.
After months of talking with the country owning the place the boss managed to get the right to import those horses at the castle and rehome them, if she gave a part of their price back to the government.

Appearance:

-Body type: they usually have a light draft body build, but it can happens to have less heavy individual looking more like mustang or more heavy like shire (depends of their habitat, thus the place they are caught). But no poney or arabian or such.

-Base coat : any natural coat colour for horses, however dominant white specimen are rare (and not free to create), greyed out white are common like any other coat.

-Markings: Always have a kind of paint marking, sabino, tobiano, splash, overo, frame called feline this means the gene provoking those traits are mutated, every mutated gene have f behind the gene, and is placed before in the coat name .
Exemple: Ee/Aa/OfOf/ = bay feline overo
The mutation express any kind of wild and big feline marking in the white paint marking. ( from lynx to tiger, leopard, cheetah...) Sometimes the white can take a slightly beige colour closer to the feline coat. The feline marking can have any colour found on real feline (exemple some breed of tiger have golden stripes so you could have golden stripes on white, albino feline marking colour can also be found) Usually a horse has one kind of feline marking but it can happens that they have two (tiger stripes and leopard spots) this may occur when the horse have several feline paint gene -which is not uncommon-. A gene has One type of marking even if the copy of the gene taken by the parents are not the same (see more in the breeding section).
Exemple: aa/ee/OfOf/ SbfSbf can be a chestnut feline cheetah overo feline tiger sabino
Purebreed are always homozygous for at least one feline paint gene (this means feline paint marking always pass to offspring.) Only the presence of the same feline mutated gene in two copies will generate the change seen in therinea (purring, cat pupils...) This explain that they have marking covering at least 50% of their body, only rare specimen are minimaly marked even with the homozygous gene present.
Note: The mutated feline Overo gene is NOT lethal while present in two examplary.

-Eyes: base colour can be any natural colour (no neon colour, but can be pale yellow or golden), they have great sight and feline pupils that dilated in the dark making them able to see when light is low, and you can see them glowing in the night.

-The less paint marking a therinae horse have, the rarest its coat is. Then you can only recognize it by its pupils and the sound it makes. (solid looking -because they still carry the feline paint gene- therinae are not allowed for creation and can only be adopted out for when I'll do an auction)

Characteristic and behavior:

Beside their appearance, Therinae horses have a great sight and heightened sens of smell. The can feel when rain or storm is coming, and not particularly found of water they usually try to find a dry place as a shelter. They have gracious and measured path, as real feline.
They are able to purr when they feel happy and some can even growl when they are not.
They aren't sociable unless being in a family herd, Halfbreed are accepted like any other therinea in family herd as long as they show the same behavior, they often learn to eat meat as well since they are raised like purebreed foal.
The more marked a therinae is, the more respected it becomes to its like, completely marked stallions are believed to be better studs, and mares the best broodmares, and are the ones other of their breed seek the most to perpetuate the blood and legacy.
They are really territorial, males are quick to fight, moreover during females' heat, but females can be picky about there partner and take time before accepting a stud near them.
Stallions have different personnality, some will stay with a mate and help rising the foals, other will only be interested in mare during heat.
Mares are really protectiv of their foal and are the one to bring meat to their foal once weaned -from carcass- , they will most likely stay together for at least a year, if seperated the mare can become really aggressiv. Once she'll find her foal strong enough she'll let it go and the horse will more likely go back to eat grass on its own.
In captivity it is not recommanded to separate mare and foal for more than a few minute during that period. (If you want to breed them you'll have to wait to get the foal, be warned.)

They eat like ordinary horses, thought if plants become rare -like during winter- they can eat some meat. Foals tend to eat more easily meat during their growth to become strong adult faster. For that they have slightly sharpened canines.

Discipline:

Far from being fearful and loving chase, they make great western horse and can be used in hunt-oriented competition, they are also really good in dressage and halter if trained properly.

They hardly stand bit, so prefers side-pull or hackamore bridle. Tackless is always the easiest way to ride a therinea horse.

Breeding:

-Purebreed x Purebreed (both sharing at least one feline paint gene ): 100% Purebreed
-Purebreed x Purebreed (not sharing any mutated feline paint gene) [Ex: a feline overo + a feline tobiano]: 100% Halfbreed -like any reaslitic horse -geneticaly correct- with feline paint marking due to mutated gene inherited, most inherit behavior traits, and can eat meat because they are raised as regular purebred.
-Purebreed x Any other realistic horse : Crossbreed realistic horse -geneticaly correct- with feline paint marking due to mutated gene inherited, sometimes inherit behavior traits if mare who raise the foal is a therinea (but no purring, no feline pupils, no sharpened canine...).
-Purebreed x Any Fantasy : Cross mix of both parents (mandatory a feline paint marking )
-Purebreed x Halfbreed (carrying the same paint marking!): 50% purebreed (all characteristics inherited, pupils heightened sens and such) 50% Halfbreed
-Purebreed x Halfbreed (carrying any other felien mutated paint marking) : 100% Halfbreed
-Purebreed x Crossbreed : 50% Halfbreed 50% Purebreed

Regarding marking, the feline marking inherited in case of crossbreedign have 85% of chance being the purebreed parents kind (tiger stripes, cheetah spots ...)
If purebreed are breed together you have 35% of chance it being the dam's marking 35% the sire, and 30% any other big cat marking.

How to get one:

To own a Therinae horse you must either have bought it from the castle or buy the right to caught a wild one from the gouvernment of mentionned country in Asia. So don't say you just found one in your stable pasture one day.
Or you breed one.

If you have any question please ask, I might have forgotten things.

Breed is currently SEMI CLOSED you can make/catch ONE starter per stable, and only common one -medium to heavy paint marked- You NEED my approval for any starter made, I'll make a list of those individual, those not listed will not be considered Therinea. You CAN breed two therinae to get a pure foal!

All those who proposed a name can make a -rare- starter if they wish =3

Can they have the LpLp pattern as a paint marking? And if so, just to make sure I get my genetics right, it would be LpfLpf correct?

nah appaloosa doesn't count, if you have appaloosa and paint the white part from the appaloosa won't have feline marking P=

Okies. Can I do a Leopard and Sabino? And I've got no internet right now, I'm afraid I may not be able to upload the two I've made for Christmas before the deadline. I'll try my hardest, but if I don't make it, can I still upload for you to see?

Two Therinae... I'm making them a stallion and a mare. I've got the picture done, it's just that I owed the dentist a thousand dollars for my surgery, so I'm out of net until I can repay that. ROFL Thank you sosososo much though, I veeeery much appreciate this!

LadyoftheGeneral [2012-06-28 15:04:07 +0000 UTC]

I had a small question about the breed build....a pure therinae and a fantasy horse would make a combination of both parent's markings only? Or can the foal have a slightly lighter build, like a warmblood? I requested to breed Domino to Melan, who is a little lighter in build than Tangeran. Since Domino is a Harlequine-Teke-Demon-Eridanus, she would technically qualify as fantasy, and she has an Akhal-Teke build. Could the foal also be of lighter build?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Meykka In reply to LadyoftheGeneral [2012-06-28 17:09:43 +0000 UTC]

the build is like any crossing, they can take more from one parent, or a mix of both, Melan will more easily get a pretty light build foal because he's light himself, tangeran will make better looking heavy foal, with feathering and big head cause he's more heavy.

LadyoftheGeneral In reply to Meykka [2012-06-28 17:31:17 +0000 UTC]

Okay, thanks for clarifying. I don't want to go as light as an Akhal-Teke, but warmblood-light would look nice with what I have in mind for their filly, Firrhan-Amali. She's going to be Grievous's first granddaughter.

well I made Melian light spanish mustang, so with akhal theke I guess it would go like a light spanish build but with longer leg and with the spanish neck P=

LadyFenris66 [2011-06-29 18:45:49 +0000 UTC]

They look great! I am a bit confused as to what coat and pattern is rare and what is common for this breed. I was thinking about catching one on the isle but I don't want to break any rules.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Meykka In reply to LadyFenris66 [2011-06-29 19:08:14 +0000 UTC]

what is rare is minimaly marked horses, because they need to have homozygous of one gene to have the physical change and characteristic (purring, pupils ect), regarding regular horses, common specimen shall have at least 60% of the body covered with white marking, but some of the therinae are still minimaly marked -only the legs and face for example- and those are rare.
there is not really rare feline pattern, the less known the feline you base it on is, more likely the rarer the pattern becomes, I guess, there is no restriction for base coat just that there is almost none dominant white horses *will add those to the info and in 'rare' state) P=

it's a lost valley ;3 and yes you can catch one there -if you plan to write a story you can just say the castle allowed you to hunt one like :devsilmesdragonstables: did ;3-

SilmesDragonStable In reply to Meykka [2011-06-21 09:48:46 +0000 UTC]

just another question. you say that at least one paint-gen need to be homozygous. but if you do, most horses have heavenly painted body (more like 75%)
so I was wondering, if I could make one with an overo pattern. But because overo if deadly in homozygous form, the horse would be heterozygous ...
or do they really need to have one homozygous marking?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Meykka In reply to SilmesDragonStable [2011-06-21 11:24:16 +0000 UTC]

Purebred need at least one gene homozygous, don't forget it's also fantasy breed, that's why even with homozygous there can be some minimaly marked -and 'realistic reason' makes it rare lol- I know it's pretty confusing x.x but I like some fantasy freedom with realistic base x'D
Halfbred can be heterozygous for any pattern =3 -and since halfbred (not crossbred) would have at least two different paint gene a 'regular' one would still have a 'heavy' marked body, thus minimaly marked halfbreed are rare too
