Description Of all the monsters that terrorize the world, none is more feared than the Tarrasque. It is a dragon-like creature of unfathomable size and power. Deep within the earth it slumbers until awakened by an unknown force to rise up and ravage the land. Nothing living is left in the destructive wake of the Tarrasque, plant or animal. Entire countries are turned into barren wastes. Once the creature's rampage comes to an end, it disappears back into the earth and falls once more into slumber.
This is Geosaga the Earth Breaker. Deep within the earth she slumbered, unawakened for thousands of years. The landscape still bore scars from her last extrusion millennia ago. A prophecy was fortold by the great elven king, Furthane, that she would awaken to destroy three great kingdoms. The first of these kingdoms was that of Pratheon, a human king. The second was the mighty provice of the dragon lord Ulkthrar Hul. The final kingdom was that of Furthane himself. He united the three lords and told them of the prophecy. They agreed that it would be in their best interest to band together and search for the Tarrasque before she was fully awakened. Combining their armies and using ancient magics, they were able to find the deep lair of the monster. Using rituals of a most powerful nature, they were able to draw her to the surface. Being so abrubtly awakened from her slumber, she was caught off guard, and not at her full strength. Man, elf, and dragon struck like lightning. The ensuing battle tore into the face of the world. Her fiery breath scorched the flesh of her enemies, and her talons ripped through their ranks. With the aid of elven magic, the dragons ripped into the carapace of the Tarrasque, exposing fleshier tissue. The war machines of man punished the openings in her defenses. With one final strike from all three armies, she was struck down. With a final bellow of pain, the tarrasque fell into the sea.
The armies buried their dead and held a day of solace for their fallen. For a week afterwards there were festivities the likes of which the world had never known. The three kingdoms were united and the land knew peace for many decades afterwards.
Geosaga, however, was not dead. Her immense body had sunk all the way to the ocean floor and crushed through it. No amount of pressure, heat, or cold could kill her, so she survived. Deep within the mantle of the world, she regenerated and grew stronger than she had ever been before. A rage beyond that of any inferno boiled inside of her heart. When the day came for her awakening, she erupted from the ground like a force of nature. Her roar shook the mountains bare of their soil. She surged forth and layed seige to Pratheon's mighty city. The humans were easily crushed under her wrath and she left neither building nor man standing.
The kingdom of the elves did not fair much better. Her fire engulfed their forested world and sent them all to an early grave. The dragon king put up a mighty resistance but found himself rapidly becoming surrounded by the corpses of his kin. He called a retreat and the few remaining of his people fled the continent.
With her revenge complete, the Tarrasque issued one final roar before descending into the mantle of the world once more. There she slumbered, her rage slowly building up inside of her.
One day, when the people of the world have all but passed her in to myth, the Tarrasque will rise again and carve another wasteland into the earth.

Make love, not war. But in this case, lets just say the war was interesting, if not causing an even worse out come later...

I love what you did with the Tarrasque. Honestly though, I don't think there's any lore like this about it. The Tarrasque was something of a legend, as you said, but I don't think it really carves out wastelands, as you put it. Simply rises to feed on EVERYTHING in its path before going back to its slumber after a few days. I don't remember much about its schedule, but it's like once every 100 years or something it goes out for a month and then returns to hibernation. Elves themselves live through decades like they're just years, so even young elves would remember that if it happened. This was a very well written story, but it felt like a bit of artistic stretching. The Tarrasque is awesome in its own right, as great as this story is, the tarrasque doesn't need to gain more publicity as a walking apocalypse. That being said, this would make a great premise for a story if you are into creative writing. "The beast below; walking the earth yet again." sort of thing.

Well I took some liberty by crossing the French mythology Tarrasque with the wizards of the coast Tarrasque. I know that it isn't the most powerful creature in D&D (with all the craziness in the epic level handbook) but I thought it would be fun to make HER the most powerful monster in whatever universe that this collection of monster gals exist within. The only thing I really took from the French tarrasque is the fire breathing. I mean, that one was a little bit of a pushover haha. It did get beaten down by a bunch of villagers. Though I suppose it didn't help that it was currently tamed by st Martha.

Yeah, those saints. Always ruining the fun. Anyway, I didn't know there was even a mythology to the Tarrasque.
