Description EDIT: UPDATED FOR GEN VIII. THIS WAS ORIGINALLY MADE DURING GEN V BY THE WAY.

Keep these traits in mind when designing Fakemon. That's what I always do. This is also how I determine how my own Fakemon blend with official Pokemon. While we may never know the true secrets behind Ken's design style, we can at least see examples of the types of designs I've seen. I used Pokemon from all 5 Generations as examples of how each Generation has at least one of those 5 aspects. For some that aren't obvious:

Type 1:
Rampardos is based on a Pachycephalosaur with no additional features.
Pidgeot is based on an Osprey or similar bird with no additional features.
Unfezant is based on a pheasant with a wattle on the male resembling how real birds have such features.
Anorith looks almost exactly like an Anomalocaris.
Lanturn is a more toned down version of an Anglerfish.
Dragalge is more or less a more realistic Leafy Sea Dragon than what Kingdra was.
Toucannon is more or less a Toco toucan.
Dubwool is based on a Jacob sheep.

Secondary Examples:
Slakoth is very close to an modern day Sloth with not much else added.
Venomoth is a Moth that better resembles an actual Moth.
Basculin is based off of fish known as Bass.
Lileep is based very directly off of a Crinoid/Sea Lily.
Noctowl is very much like a Horned Owl.
Furfrou is basically Pokemon's answer to a Poodle and not much else.
Wishiwashi in its Solo Form effectively represents a singular sardine or schooling type of fish.
Barraskewda is based off of a Barracuda.

Type 2:
Bastiodon: No further explanation required.
Girafarig: Uses it's tail to fool enemies into thinking it's more intimidating. Or, at least that's how I view it's tail being used. Or it could more likely use it as keeping an eye on what's approaching from the rear.
Omastar: Shell was too heavy for it to move, hence it became extinct.
Masquerain: It's head crests can form an eye shape, something some moths do in real life to scare predators.
Zekrom: It's tail, based on a turbine engine, enables it to move faster in flight.
Diggersby: It's ears now function as full blown arms, allowing it to dig holes easily.
Decidueye: Its wings function as a bow for it to utilize its signature move, Spirit Shackle.
Dragapult: It's distinct head shape as a Diplocaulus based mon turns it into a stealth bomber.

Secondary Examples:
Beedrill is based off a Wasp, whose stings are painful. However, Beedrill stings with it's hands, which are shaped like spear-like stingers.
Octillery is an Octopus with a head designed as a bazooka.
Sharpedo is based off of a Shark. It's name, in addition to it's lack of a tail, make it designed more like a Bullet Bill Torpedo.
Vespiquen is a Queen Bee that doubles as a Hive for her servants to live in.
Whirlipede is a Cocoon based insectoid that is designed to roll along the ground for movement.
Clawitzer is a Pistol Shrimp, which is a Shrimp which can shoot water bubbles as hot as the sun... and Clawitzer's claw is a huge arse cannon. I need no further explanation here.
Lunala is overall a very stylized bat in the shape of the moon. Its wings can spread to allow its full body to form a full moon to utilize Moongeist Beam with.
Eternatus' entire rib cage is the barrel of a cannon.

Type 3:
Nidoking is basically a rabbit meets dinosaur meets gorilla basically.
Armadlo is a similar mashup except themed around Anomalocaris.
Ampharos is mainly a sheep in basis, but everything about it makes it hard to think of Mareep anymore.
Rhyperior is Gen IV's attempt given how I already had an example for Gen I in the form of Nidoking, which Rhydon is also an example of combining basis's into one design.
Samurott is an otter/sea lion sort of mix.
Goodra is a Slug/Dragon mixture.
Kommo-o is Komodo dragon/Pangolin mixture.
Arctozolt is a very literal Velociraptor/Unspecified prehistoric marine animal.

Secondary Examples:
Rhydon is a Rhinoceros mixed in with a combination setup very similar to Nidoking; dinosaurs and gorilla type animals added in to make it resemble a typical Daikaiju.
Tyranitar shares many similarities to Godzilla; it's body is the combination of a Tyrannosaurus, Iguanodon, and Stegosaurus type of animals that make it the way it is.
Vigoroth has arms more similar to a Sloth, but the movement and body style of a very active Primate type of animal.
Lucario is a lot like Anubis; head and features of a jackal, body of a man.
Eelectross is an Electric Eel mixed in with a Lamprey or Leech type of aquatic animal.
Noivern is the mixture of a Fruit Bat and a Wyvern.
Lycanroc's two forms represent two different types of Werewolves; one being on all fours, one being on two legs. Either way you look at it, you're combining a creature of myth with either a normal wolf (Midday Form) or a humanoid (Midnight Form).
Flapple and Appletun are both a play on the definition Wyrm for a limbless dragon, taken here as the Worm, or in this case, "Wyrm of the Apple"

Type 4:
Skarmory, Aggron are both metal versions of their typical basis.
Ponyta has flames on it in a similar example.
Luxray and Zebstrika are electric themed for similar reasons as well.
Gogoat has a hedge bush type of back covering.
Wishiwashi School Form combines a whole school of fish into a more singular, submarine type of design.
Centiscorch is a centipede with a very distinct fiery motif to it.

Secondary Examples:

Raichu is a mouse with electrical attributes, Mareep is no different.
Shedinja is the shed shell of a Cicada brought back to life, hence the Ghost type.
Torterra is a Tortoise with a giant tree and mountain on it's back.
Krookadile's shade-like eyes give off a mobster type of criminal (Dark type's Japanese name is Evil Type).
Malamar, being a Squid that stands upside down, gives off a very demonic vibe which can relate to both Dark and Psychic types.
Araquanid is more or less a Diving bell spider with a constant bubble around its body parts.
Toxtricity resemble Agama lizards with an electrical punk rocker motif.

Type 5:
All of these Pokemon are either based on in-animate objects (Claydol, Bronzong, Chandelure, Palossand, Runerigus ) or move (Porygon2) or act (Electrode and Klefki) like one.

Secondary Examples:
Magnemite, Unown, Solrock, Spiritomb (quite literally with this one), Gigalith, Honedge, Minior, Polteageist
