Mi'ara has the dream of diving underwater alongside dolphins - and stay down as long as they do! At some point even her passionate freediving training could not help her much longer but that's when her tinkering side could shine. Of course she wouldn't want to use full on scuba gear which would take her mermaid-like agility away. However she realized she does not necessarily need a full on tank to raise her time from her usual 4-5 minutes to the 8-10 of a dolphin.

Here she is testing a solution she has come up with and it seems like she is quite confident because she set the lock-timer of her training tank to eight minutes!
The principle of her contraption is simple: A balloon is embedded between her legs inside her otherwise skintight mermaid suit. Two tubes hidden below the material reach into her mouth, allowing her to pass air in and out. When at the regular pressure at the surface like here, she can exhale her used air through her nose to take the lungful of fresh air that is stored inside the balloon.

When deeply underwater, she can even get away without any airloss because the waterpressure reduces the volume drastically.
Either way, once the balloon is slightly deflated, she can resort to breathing her air back and forth. Since this relaxes her lungs, it gains her a couple more, precious seconds before requiring a water surface and fresh air.
