Here are some numbers for you.
GUN DEATHS
Let's give a tip of the hat to historian Clayton E. Cramer (writing in the July 1 edition of Shotgun News) for going directly to the web site of the Centers for Disease Control (www.cdc.gov/nchs/datawh/statab/unpubd/m ortabs/gmwki.htm — search under ICD 922.0) and looking up the actual number of American children under the age of 15 who are killed in handgun accidents each year. For 1997, that number was 21 — down from a high of 55 in 1990.
Read it
POOL DEATHS
Each year, nationwide, about 300 children under 5 years old drown in swimming pools, usually a pool owned by their family.
Read it here
This is comparing deaths to age 15 and deaths to age 5, how many drowning deaths would there be if the numbers went to age 15 in drowings?
If we outlaw pools before guns we could save 460 more children a year.
But everyone love a pool right.
Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my guns have.

nothing like the Shotgun News for a unbiased opinion....
here are the facts... from the CDC
1,443 kids under 18 killed by guns in 2002
of those 1,443
627 were 15 or younger
of those 627
77 were accidental
.... 517 kids under 5 drowned accidentally in swimming pools in 2002...
so...
im all for not letting toddlers unwatched if your for not letting kids play with guns...
...but i forgot... you've got a bill of rights to protects....
happy hunting.

Did you get the under 18 drownings to compare even numbers to under 18 gun deaths?
Save more lives, ban pools.

thank goodness some people (YOU, mibi) have the rational thought and words to deal with these narrow-minded comments.
if the manufacturering of guns and bullets was taken away from private enterprises and government took control for the purpose of law enforcement, this would be a beginning for a safer future.
it's time for the "wild wild west" era to end.
are we not a civilized people?

Drowning deaths per year to kids 18 and younger.... 1,156
Firearm deaths per year to kids 18 and younger.... 2,098
and thats not swimming pools, thats all drowning deaths, lakes, rivers, oceans. Im sure swimming pools would be considerable lower.
but regardless... even the above is a meaningless statistic by itself.... to really understand the severity of the data and the issue one has to look at the statistics in a relative manner.
for example..... of the 1,156 kids that drown in a year... how many kids enjoy swimming responsibly in a year? .... millions...
and subsequently.... of the 2,098 kids that are shot to death in a year ... how many kids enjoy firearms responsibly ... you tell me...
if we were talking of just totals, then cigarette smoking, driving a car, eating food (choking) would all be banned well before swimming pools.... however this is stupid since its not taken relatively, and millions eat drink and smoke.
however, if we look at the occurance of the act (owning, using, enjoying a firearm) relative to its mortality rate for the age group ...
you will quickly see that firearms top that charts of things that should be banned.
and if you want to go further and dissect the category of firearms you will see that hanguns are at the top of that list.
but perhaps you missunderstand me.... im not anti-hunting, or anti-2nd amendment .... what i would like to see is the banning of handguns and assalt rifles.... quite simply because they are designed to kill people .... and the american public cannot use these weapons responsibly.
just ask the 30,242 people that are killed each year by firearms....
and im sure the 4,146 yearly drowning victems might agree also.

Lack of education and common sense kills people. People have always killed other people, it's just the way they've done it has changed with guns. Are knives to be condemned for all the stabbings and knife-point robberies that occur? Of course not, people are.

how many little children kill themselves or others with knives per year? ....yes people allways have and allways will kill other people.... the factor is how easy it is.... should people be able to carry grenades? why not....? how about dirty bombs?.... i agree that lack of education kills people....and its a sad fact that the american populace is not educated enough and does not have enough common sense to use guns responsibly....

Sad but true... Apparently there are only 2 hunting accident deaths in Canada per year and to go hunting (legally) you must have taken a course in gun safety and passed the test. At least we're doing well in that department. Gun control is very hard to put in place without discriminating based on age or IQ. Because some of the hunters I went with weren't very "book smart" but they were deffinetly gun smart. Gun safety could be taught in schools, but then you know someone would start crying that the government is promoting guns. The government isn't promoting sex, but apparently sex ed has had an impact on the general population's sexual habits in terms of using condoms, so yeah, Maybe it would be a good thing for schools to teach mandatory "gun ed". That's enough blabbering from me though, since I can't do anything to put that in place. I might as well be talking about the perfect hate-free prejudice-free society, right?

There are less than 200 accidental firearm deaths a year in the US. There are 2 million cases each year where a would-be victim defended themselves with a gun in a legal fashion.

Beautiful job of proving your point intelligently and simply. I really like this a lot. It's very concise while remaining delicate. I love how bold the statement is, and you didn't require a novel to make it clear.

this is fantastic...
america's obsession with guns scares me somewhat.
the amount of gun-related crimes we have here *with* a ban on guns..
but yeah, the manip is fabulous.
love the kid's expression, and combined with the text it really sent a chill down my spine.

the allowing of the experation of the assault weapons ban seems to me to be excessively political and not in the best interests of the citizens of the US. Oh well, what else can you expect from politicians?
