Since this says "critique" I'm giving a real one, not just a "hey this looks cool."

First, I'd like to say I love how natural this looks. I can tell it hasn't been "doctored" to look this way. Canons always take lovely pictures! The timing in capturing the waves is perfect. The froth actually reminds me of dry ice, with how it floats around the rocks, instead of crashing into them. The balance of the image is great, with the contrasting colors blending together nicely. The sea is a very vivid blue, and it plays of the sunset giving a slight purple tint on the left. Honestly, I love seeing some purple in a sunset. Overall, you have a well balanced image.

Allow me to say this first: It is very beautiful. The colours and soft and dreamy. With pictures such as this that is always a definate winner. Also, the point of showing much of the rocks and sea, and only a bit of the sky (plus the angle of focus) adds to the otherwordlyness.
Personally I am going to complain on one thing, though - as much as I have learned and seen it in work, the horizon should be either a straight line, or then again - totally twisted, like 40-50 degrees up/down. So perhaps you could consider adjusting it a little?
All in all, a very beautiful photo and something I would most assuredly picture on many walls, especially with that wide white frame.

I agree. I think that your critique was spot on. And I'm glad you mentioned the horizon as the fact that it's a little off kilter, dipping down slightly on the left. There is so much darkness on the right side due to the shoreline stretching to the horizon and adding to it the horizon line dipping a little on the left -it throws off the balance of the image a bit.

Though the colors and textures of the piece were quite breathtaking. I think the horizon would be my only gripe too. lol

And my only gripe.
Hmm. Gripe. *grabs a new word and places it into her vocabulary*

But then again, quite a matter of taste. Just something that irked me, and that was really the ONLY thing.

TracyWong In reply to Mithgariel [2009-04-03 23:25:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, exactly. When a work has only one thing that I could point out and change if I could then I'd call that piece a definite success.

Absolutely. Plus, I took a stroll in the gallery and saw a bunch more to my liking
I'm really beginning to like this new critique system. I see art I've not seen before and meet artists I've not met before. (I put it to use in my gallery as well and I'm really expecting to benefit from in-depth opinions)

Selfassault In reply to Mithgariel [2009-04-03 16:19:09 +0000 UTC]

Uhm, is just my opinion but i'm not sure about the horizon thing.
I mean, OK it's not 100% horizontal and all that but, that slight decline, besides the angle of the tree to the left (and must again say it's all my modest opinion) marks a good subtle point of originality (I would have gave it 4 stars ^^) being the rocks in the sea near the horizon which sets some kind of "artificial" horizon.
I'm not really sure but i think, probably a 100% horizontal line would not work because maybe the tree and the rocks would make the watcher feels uncomfortable and probably too 40-50 degrees would be too much.
Don't know, i'm talking a little on suppositions.
P.D. 5 stars for the tonning ^^

Mithgariel In reply to Selfassault [2009-04-03 22:57:37 +0000 UTC]

You know, I am not going to argue, because it is mostly a matter of taste, and that is very, very subjective

PS. What is "tonning"? (English is not my native )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Selfassault In reply to Mithgariel [2009-04-03 23:07:12 +0000 UTC]

Oh, nonono ^^ you're completely right, it's a matter of taste and of course i don't never ever argue, i find it not so useful at all and there's lots of things still completely unknown for me on photography.
PS. Sorry, i meant "toning" sometimes i misspell things, English is not my naive either

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mithgariel In reply to Selfassault [2009-04-03 23:10:25 +0000 UTC]

Aye. Arguing is meant for changing the other people's mind, and I've got no such intention. Giving the artist one of many opinions, though, was one.

Ah, toning. And I was thinking that it was yet again some pretty slang word which we foreigners can never cope with.

A very lovely piece, I think my favourite bit about it is the colour.
The soft blue contrasts so well with the orange - red of the sky, and the dark brown of the rocks.

I also love the composition, it is well balanced, and the tree on the right adds a good element to the total. However, what I noticed, it is also slightly tilted (the horizontal line). It would probably look better a little more even.

I love the look of the water, somehow like a huge bubble bath.
The soft spot just near to the tree, what is that by the way? Well I think without it, it would look a little better, because it distracts a little.
But anyways, it is still an amazing photograph.

Agree its a lovely image, only thing throwing me off is the horizon. Make it straight and turn it into a masterpiece.

My group and I traveled in two cars. I was in the first car with the second following behind. My friends and I were singing so loudly in car #1, that car #2 could hear our echoes as they rounded each turn.

Good times.
