TIPS when using sharpies on scratchboard: the ink can easily smudge the surface, so try to color lightly and in a few strokes max to prevent this kind of smudging. Using anything other than a permanent marker will not be as effective when adding color to scratchboard (for example ordinary markers or anything else in the marker category ONLY). When applying, the ink takes a few moments to dry, so before that you can do what I did and use a paper towel to either create marker gradients or blend with other colors.
