Description Ambystoma mavortium - Barred tiger salamander.

I roadcruised this one in SW Kansas, within their native range which was nice because they're an invasive species back home in California, and are hybridizing with our endemic California tiger salamanders, which is slowing killing out some of the pure CA tiger populations.

Whoa, cool It's been awhile since you uploaded but I figured you were busy. How big was the salamander?

I've been super busy, plus it's been so hot lately, nothing's been too active so I haven't really found anything exciting.
This guy was around 7.5 inches or so total length. Definitely good sized. We spotted it in the other lane of the highway at 65 miles per hour in the rain, at almost 1 am, after nearly ten hours of driving. haha. Needless to say, after that long, we were antsy to find something. It was the first herp of a three day trip to western Kansas.

Haha. I'm from northern California, where we have both California and Coastal giant salamanders, which get up to 14 inches or so, plus California tigers which get up to 9ish, so this guy wasn't anything too special, although it is a new species for me to find at least. haha.

Your eyes become trained to spot things like this when you go out driving roads looking for snakes multiple times a week, 7 months out of the year, for 14 years. Hahaha
