Description August/September 2005

This took me too long to do, and it shouldn't have. It was annoying me (all my drawings do when they're nearly finished - all the finishing off details! Grr!), so I thought I should finish it off before I retire off to bed, or I'll probably end up having bizarre dreams about it.

I really loved the reference photo my friend ~baldrickthecunning took of this old abandoned insane asylum near London and thought it would make a good drawing, therefore I had to draw it. Whether it is a good drawing is another matter, however! I've walked around the outside of this place, it is HUGE, and I mean, HUGE. It is all falling down, completely overgrown and arsonists have been in and such, so a very eerie atmosphere all around.

I did another drawing of Cane Hill last year, it is *here* . I think I have improved since then. Well here's hoping anyway

Materials
5B pencil
B mechanical pencil
A4 Bristol Board (YES! I finally have some!)

Wow, this is a marvelous architectural drawing! Great work. What makes this stand out is the high level of contrast from bright white to darkest of black. And the realisticness of it doesn't hurt neither. One suggestion I would make is to darken the faded area of sky around the tower. It sorta breaks the illusion of solidity in the background.

Awesome, I like the contrast between the white and black, and that it kind of has an illustrative feel, like it belongs to a story

I like these new building drawings! I think they've really brought out something in your style. It looks like it could be a watercolour- especially the drawing of the whole building. I like the composition and it almost seems to be a bit wonky, im not sure if thats the angle of the shot, but gives it a hint of Tim Burton which is quite fitting considering the building's use! Makes it quite stylish too. Keep up the building drawings! Im so biased but you should.

Wow, another awesome piece. How you have such control of the pencil is amazing, and baffles me. Care to fill me in ? I particularly like the accuracy of the shadowing, which is spot-on (excuse the pun). Archetecture can be quite difficult, simply because of the parrallel lines involved, as well as the laws of physics. But you obviously have no such problems. Keep up the great work!

Thankyou for your kind comments Well actually, as you've commented on control of the pencil, I've recently discovered these little smudging pencil things which I have found so useful in my two most recent drawings, especially as I work on quite a small scale (A4) and allowed me to get right down to the tiny details and make them blend together, it is quite amazing. Everyone else probably knew about these things long ago, but I only just discovered them!

Ah yes, I think I know what you mean. I hear they're great (again, you've just told me ), but I haven't used them as of yet. May give them a try one day after so many good 'reviews' . Well, however you do it, just carry on! You're a big talent, and next time I update my journal I'll have to add to you my list .

superchickenn123 [2005-09-01 23:41:12 +0000 UTC]

the rendering is beautiful, but what i see is that purhaps the value range used (lightest highlights and darkest shadows) is a little short... if this where a photograph, i would say it felt underexposed. brighter highlights and darker shadows would definately make this image jump to life... that's my 2 cents. i give this piece a 6

0_0 The shading on this is spectacular!!! I am trying to draw a building at the moment and get detail through it but I am finding it tough. Your detail and depth in this piece however is really great, I can see why it took you a long time!

Very nice use of lighting and the texture is particulary nice as well, this is a very nice piece of art ^_^
