Description Hallo, alle zusammen! (Hi, everybody!)

Heute gibt es ein SpezialmenΓΌ! (Today we'll have a special menue!)

Weil ich meiner Muttersprache huldigen mΓΆchte . . .
(Cause I want to render homage to my mother tongue . . .

. . . habe ich diese Kreatur mit einem deutschen Namen bezeichnet!
. . . I gave this creature a german name!)

Wurzelfee! (spoken: woort-cell-feh)

Just kidding! This creature is the second one in my little series about creatures without an essential organ earth's creatures need.
This time: digestion! And how's this possible? The answer is quiet simple: photosynthesis! I just love the idea, that plants could be able to move and so I designed this thing.
And I always wonder why something like this doesn't work on earth!!! (OK, there are some slugs and worms feeding on symbiotic algae . . . )

Everything about his anatomy you can read from the descriptions. But a last thing about the name: "Wurzelfee" means "root fairy" - and I think thats the best for this little beauty!

Do you think an active creature could get enough energy that way?

I think the only real reason nothing like this exists on Earth is because evolution here just happened to not ever take such a path. Evolutionary possibilities that didn't happen on Earth could still have happened on other worlds though.

this really gives me a lot to think about...
it would be great if we humans and other animals were able to photosynthesize too...
then the world hunger would've ended!!
of course we need some other creatures to produce carbon dioxide for us hehe

an alternate source would be from the roots

MickMcDee In reply to MondoArt [2012-01-02 19:25:34 +0000 UTC]

there would be enough creatures producing carbon dioxide, cause we wouldnt need to feed on them just imagine how our clothes would look like, if we had some big leafs like that on our back . . .

MondoArt In reply to MickMcDee [2012-01-08 12:07:51 +0000 UTC]

probably no need for clothings, as the leaves and vines would do the job.

might be interesting, produce our own oxygen and food, while asorbing our own carbon dioxide... so its like every man for himself

i've not posted any on here, maybe i should, but i've bee workingon designs for alien species which use photosynthesis for food. its a great idea, why have no life forms (that we know of) done this already, much more efficient. i suppose photosynthesis wouldn't create enough energy for such complicated beings though. you never know, maybe it could happen on another planet, in different conditions

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MickMcDee In reply to Ira-624 [2011-06-21 13:53:50 +0000 UTC]

yeah, that could be possible
i've read something about photosynthesis using animals - and there are indeed worms which have no digestive system and can act really fast! so, such animals still exist on earth - and they definately exist in an even more effective form on other habital planets!

no what would be cool if u could take an animal with a heart and use like a robotic heart or something tht powered the heart.amagen drawing a picture like tht with a robotic heart out of the left bottom side of the animal no whats better make the animal alien. Or one time ithought of this idea where there was this wolf lie creature (alien) that was like totlally human for the first half like the head an stuff than the back legs and lower abs were robotic like the were thousands of complicated hinges or like smaller hydraulic looking things that helped the creature move. THe back legs that were robotic like could move in a hundred different dirrections just because of the hinge type things not hinge but u know hard to explain, but anyways ya if it needed to grasp or pull somethinging it could do it the easiest and fastest way. it made it really easy for it o catch its prey. idk thats my idea u should try drawing it i would its just to compliated yet for me.

LIKE your drawing though!

cool! but i have to spit this out i've been thinking about this like forever couldn't get it out of my head. i had this idea about a creature wit out a heart acting a bit like one of those drinking bird toys that uses gravity to create blood flow. just had to say that!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MickMcDee In reply to ContemplateCast [2011-01-22 16:06:06 +0000 UTC]

creating blood flow without heart by using gravity??? damn, thats a really cool idea!!!
But: Do you think organisms in a different enviroment really need a heart? Just look at jellyfish or sponges - even some earth creatures don't have a heart!
But nevermind, the idea is still great. Would like to see such a creature!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ContemplateCast In reply to MickMcDee [2011-01-24 01:02:42 +0000 UTC]

True that but maybe it could be like a land creature with lungs that just happens for some strange reason not to have a heart. Not quite sure how that would happen but it be interesting.

The likely reason something like this doesn't work on earth is the relatively slow energy gain through photosynthesis versus the high energy cost of actually walking around and having to respond to a greater range of stimuli. Also, absorbing nutrients from the ground requires quite a bit of being still and a large root surface area - which is not really optimal if you are also wanting to roam about.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MickMcDee In reply to Ananisapta [2011-01-22 15:59:12 +0000 UTC]

hmm, your right - but that are the rules of earth!!!
its hard to imagine, but maybe other planets organisms have a different metabolism, cause the planet conditions are completely different!!!
but nevermind, I'm glad about your professional comment^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ananisapta In reply to MickMcDee [2011-01-23 11:55:11 +0000 UTC]

Hardly professional, just a long-time interest in biology.

It strikes me as a possibility that the nutrient absorption thing could work a whole heap better if the organism lived in a swamp-like environment, and waded through the soupy mix rather than walking around on dry land. There is still the photosynthesis problem, because regardless of the metabolism there's only so much you can do with such a slow energy supply. Two possibilities are either that it remains motionless for long periods building up reserves before moving, but that begs the question of why would it need to move? Or alternatively that it supplements its supply by attacking other plants or animals. Actually, if it went around vampirising other plants, that would make a whole load of sense, as it would never need to move particularily quickly, or for very long, so low energy costs, and it would give it a reason for moving, seeking out its next victim.

Maybe it only moves as an emergency escape mechanism, or when it's depleted the local nutrient supply/isn't getting enough light?
