Description I wanted to do an experimental\sort of warm up piece to work on bringing my art techniques together a bit more, and I remembered how Citrus-Chickadee gave me the go ahead to use her photos of her cats to base paintings off of, and figured that this would be as good a time as any. I used this photo, and the marking are modeled fairly loosely after Tigger's (the cat's).

I'm really happy with this! See, over time I've developed a number of processes for art that ended up being fairly separate from each other, although a couple did involve starting out with rough shapes and refining it down, so I was able to bring those together first. The other main technique I brought in here was the same one I used for my 'contest entry - beary' piece, where I pretty much just stick to an airbrush and slowly work down to smaller sized as I add details. I'm really happy with how this worked out for the cloth, and then I worked it though the fur a bit to tone down the rougher shapes that had shown up, while trying to keep some of the texture. I definitely need to use the airbrush a bit earlier, because bringing it in when I'd already started to add some fur detail was pretty tricky, especially since I hadn't quite defined the overall shape properly yet, haha

I'd still consider this a rough art work, since there's a lot of parts where I didn't round them off as I'd wanted to. At the moment I don't feel like I've got enough art-time to sit down and spend a day or three on a painting, which means my patience with wanting to finish a piece is pretty short. I have a pretty big priority on posting regularly at the moment, so pieces that take forever are a bit out of my interest range.

Now, I've just got to remember what I was meant to be doing the warm up for....

Love the colors. The orange contrasts nicely with the gray

Hello I'm from

this is a great piece and a cute cat. What I like the most is the the textures you used to draw the cat. May I ask you which brushes you used? You also have a great understanding of values. Just amazing how you did the shading of the cat and how the silk cloth reflects some of the colours from the reddish fur. The cloth looks so silky and shiny and I love the slightly blurred out effect.

What I think would improve the appearance even more is when the lighting coming from outside would reflect on the cat's fur. Probably it was on purpose that the the background sky as well as most of the other elements are quite gray to make the red fur of the cat shine. But I think some resulting rim light on the cat would help blend the cat into the whole background scenery.

Lastly I think the sky looks not like a sky with clouds. To me it looks a bit too textured.

But all the things in the background are not that important and probably it was your purpose to leave everything in the background 'rough'. And you did such a fantastic job on the foreground elements which are the main focus. The undetailed background really helps focussing on the cat.

I looked at the image you used as reference and I must say you really did a good job on making the piece your own. I love your interpretation and you managed to even 'lift' the original image . It makes me want to draw a cat again too .
It's also really interesting you start with an airbrush and add textures at the end. If you happend to record some of your processes I would be really interested to watch .

All in all even though it is a 'fast' piece as you say it really shows your high level of skill . I hope to get where you are one day

Thank you for the thorough feedback! I'll try to respond neatly- here goes,
- I used three brushes. Dry bristle; airbrush; slanted pen; and a value-hue shifting brush
- I definitely could have used the backlight to my advantage more, yeah, thanks for pointing that out!
- I got lazy on the sky woops. Not so much intentional- I've got focus issues and an incredibly low patience, which has made my art pretty messy
- I did actually record my process, yeah! I record most of my processes now, I'm just really behind of putting together videos and posting them. I can note when I put it up, if you like?
- Thank you!! ksdhadlfjadkjlkdf you flatter me

Hi I'm from Project Comments and I'm here as part of the Weekly Comment Project!

I have to say I adore this piece! The atmosphere, rendering style and choice of colors are all very powerful aspects and I especially like the composition and subject choice. Overall it just works quite well. Personally I think some of the unfinished areas actually add to the aesthetic of the image and provide this very rough painterly effect. There is a good variance when it comes to materials and its easy to read. My only critique would be to perhaps add some sharper highlights on the cat, perhaps the face, just to create some contrast and draw attention towards the center of the image. Some sharp highlights on some areas of the fur could easily solve this. With that said, its still a good piece, I hope my critique proves useful! ^^

I found this picture on and honestly...I can't think of anything to say. The lighting is lovely, the anatomy looks great. The kitty looks cuddly and adorable. The fabric under the cat looks great too and I like the way you blurred the background so the cat is the center of focus. I can't find anything that I could suggest you do differently! Great job^^

I thought that looked familiar when I saw the thumbnail!

That aside, I think you got the pose pretty well here, and the airbrush texture works nicely for the fur.

Yess!! I found myself really wanting to draw a cat from reference, then I remembered having mentioned it to you before. I'm glad you like it!
