I really think the biggest problem was when the show came back from being cancelled, when it switched the audience from the pop culture joke lovers to the younger gamer audiences who liked the comedic sociopath angle.  And then the show ran with it until it became non-humor.  Then they just didn't know what audience they were going for.  Then of course, the best writers left early on for their own projects.  Meanwhile, American Dad has become inspired weirdness in its TBS seasons.  "Rabbit Ears" has become my favorite episode of the series, with that great Twilight Zone/Are You Afraid of the Dark type storyline.

Somehow, it's funnier because it isn't exactly set up and just randomly tossed out there with no actual purpose other than referencing something from the 80's.  You know, like the GOOD seasons of Family Guy.

Exactly! Give me back that decade in pop culture any day to go with the music my family got to like!...and not just the popular music acts; we preferred some lesser-knowns, too.
