Description

With the proliferation of new weapons and drive technology, the Concordiat Navy was faced with the problem of deciding which ship classes would recieve the new technologies first.

Ultimately the new Grendel class destroyers would create the answer. With their blistering speed they outran the old dreadnoughts, part of the same rapid response forces as them. The Dreadnoughts, then, would be the first capital ships to recieve full post-war makeovers, allowing them to keep up with and command the new destroyers in rapid response Wolf Packs.

All phasers have been replaced with phased arrays. Likewise the sensor suite has been upgraded, and the new warp engines have been fitted. After a review it was found that the large Marine detachment of the design was seldomly used. Eliminating most barracks and removing the assault craft hangar space gave room for mounting two disruptor cannons, and a reshaping of the secondary hull, allowing for more efficient warp bubble shaping.

Costs of this rebuild were high, and of the Concordiat's 24 dreadnoughts, 6 only recieved new warp engines, rather than being extensively rebuild. These units would be stationed on the far side of the Concordiat, far from the Concordiat/Kzinti Patriarchy border and it's attendant troubles.
