Description This is the box and banner art for our new standalone expansion to Quantum Quest.  Reinforcements doubles the amount of available adventurers and chambers, bringing some cool new abilities and a meaner dungeon to the table.  The art features four new heroes who you'll be seeing a lot of over the next few months.  Thanks to dleoblack for another great project!

Tellest and Quantum Quest are certainly not your typical fantasy

The redhead is actually one of a variety of different trolls within the world, by the way.

thats a troll? i could have sworn that it was a dark elf of some sorts, im not a big fan of reskinned human-ish races since i prefer anthros or some other more distinct races, but your universe seems interesting since it has distinct races.

Thank you!

We do have our share of the Tolkien-esque fantasy races (humans, dwarves, elves, gnomes, orcs), and I've twisted up some interpretations of established races (goblins, gremlins and kobolds are pretty different than you'd normally see them in fantasy).  We also have the cool anthro races.  Tellest is definitely very high fantasy.

Our trolls are probably our most varied race, and depending on who you ask (in world), calling them trolls is kind of a big bucket concept that doesn't make sense.

For instance, who could think that Suja, the assassin on the Reinforcements banner could be related to this guy:

ah i see, yep this guy looks like a gray orc of some sorts, the trolls seems to be pretty varied when compared to the huge but skinny ones that we usually see, how often do you use anthro races as protagonist or in the protagonist party?

In my first books, not very much.  I had a werewolf and that was pretty much it.  I wanted to introduce people to a world that felt familiar before expanding out and showing off the other races, like the kaja (catfolk), avarians (birdfolk) and lagano (lizardfolk).  Thus far, a rhinotaur hasn't featured in any of my books, though I know they will.  A minotaur just had a starring role in a Halloween story I finished last year (and is getting a bigger treatment this year).  We also reorganized kobolds as anthro canine.  I can tell you the exact books that have anthro characters if you're interested, even if it's just to look at the covers :-p

thats a nice take, its good to see those cool anthros being used in important roles rather than being wasted as being mere minions to be killed, and sure, id like to know the ones with important roles! like an anthro party member.

Absolutely!

Transformed features Werebears pretty prominently as an important plot point.
Lord of Thunder introduces Keota, an avarian hero who is the second lead of the story.  I think later on his sister is going to have her own starring role in a trilogy of her own, just because I feel like she went over really well.  I have art of her and Keota that I'll show on DA soon (like a week or so), but just came to the Tellest website a bit ago.
Dragonspeaker follows a kaja named Kaiyonani who forges a bond with a dragon and learns magic because of it.
Heart of the Forest features werebears, lagano and avarians in pretty big areas, and also gnolls as villains.

I can get you the link to my site if you want.

thats a nice number of stories with them when compared to the usual zero in the case of most authors, come to think of it, anthros are kind of a practical way of creating distinct races that are also relatable, an anthro is distinct enough to  not be called a human recolor but they are not too alien looking.

and sure!

I definitely think games like D&D and Shining Force have pushed me to think of anthro characters as ones that I'd like to see in my stories.  More and more, I'm embracing them as ones that I wouldn't mind seeing at the forefront, and leading their own stories as well.  It's going to be fun bringing all these characters together, especially when some of the characters haven't had the chance to meet members of the races their unfamiliar with.

Here's the link for Tellest:  tellest.com/ Hope you like what you see!

the dnd possess some interesting races, its a shame that races like kenku and dragonborn aren't playable in dnd videogames(even though they are playable in pnp), shining force also got some interesting races, having a phoenix as one of the main characters is not very common, not to mention the excellent designs for anthros like the birdmen and beastmen, its a shame that they probably wont release a shining force 4.

nice arts there! specially the one with the avian anthro duo!

Thanks!  The one who is closer to the front is Lyrie, who I'm trying to develop a trilogy around.  We'll see where we go with that.  All depends on what I have time for, and where she'd fit in around the other parts of the saga.

While I don't know that you'd see a phoenix as a super-sentient being in Tellest (although, who knows), I do know that there are a few tribes of avarians that are based around the phoenix mythology, so they have some coloring that looks like fire in their wings, as well as an affinity for fire-based magic and powers.

that kind of protagonist would probably have a different point of view, most fantasy protagonists cant fly, which means that she may have to understand certain details from non-flying races, not sure if that will be difficult to write but it does sounds pretty cool!

to be honest, phoenixes are pretty hard to have as a sentient race if they have the whole rebirth included, i mean, whats the drama of having a phoenix die if they can just go back to life a few moments later? on the other hand, your fire avarians are much easier to work with, having an elemental racial power should be easy to fit in stories.(shining force 2 is a pretty fun game, but its lore has some flaws, peter could in theory defeat every army since he can just revive himself, not possible during gameplay since that would make him even more broken)

I think if I was going to include a phoenix in my story, it wouldn't be a situation where the phoenix could perpetually be reborn... it would just be a one time deal.  But that kind of stuff will definitely be fun to work out.  I'm excited by the variety that I have to play with in Tellest.  It's not what I would think is popular right now (gritty, realistic fantasy a la Game of Thrones), but I think there's enough room for people who like quirky, bold, high fantasy as well.  I'll tell you what though: all those races would probably make it tough to do a live action flick of it :-p

yes, reducing the power of such ability would be a good idea, a literal immortal race wouldnt be easy to work with, indeed, if such ability has limited use then they would probably avoid getting killed just like any race would, i too think that this kind of fantasy has a big appeal, specially if you do manage to release a movie with lots of different looking races in the party, as for live action, i guess it depends on how skilled your team is, or you could make a cartoon or a 3d animated movie(those two are also pretty good choices).

It is kind of funny that you say that, because I do have a character who keeps dying and coming back to life.  That's his power, and it leads to a lot of funny moments.  He's definitely the comic relief of my series, though he hasn't had a lot of overlap with any of the other big characters.

I would be ecstatic just to have a five minute look at my characters in the style of something like a League of Legends video.  Some day maybe :-p

if that his power only then it must be something tied to the individual rather than his race, since he is a comic relief then this should work well, like kenny.

well im training in 3d modeling, cant make humans or anthros yet but if i manage to learn then i can make a 3d version of a character of yours.

That would be awesome!

Yeah, kind of like Kenny, although I think the character was more influenced by Mario and other video game characters who always came back after they died.  It's going to be an interesting power scheme to explore!

specially for comic relief characters, being able to constantly revive takes away a lot of the drama of the character so its pretty good for this, so its a character that just respawns when killed, no need to wait too long for the revive then.

for now i can only make some objects, after i get more advanced i think i will try to make an anthro bird.

Mikedeangelo In reply to blistal [2019-05-14 12:38:59 +0000 UTC]

The trick is to find some other ways to make the drama.  Sure, he can't be permanently killed (yet), but there are other ways to cause problems for him.  If you capture him and make it so he can't kill himself, he's in perpetual prison.  While he's stuck, the whole world is going on around him, and he has to worry about what else is out there.  Also, he doesn't show up where he died, so there's a little bit of travel time involved in coming back to life (more on that as the stories progress).

Definitely let me know when you're working on stuff.  Don't be shy about sharing on DA!

blistal In reply to Mikedeangelo [2019-05-15 05:00:32 +0000 UTC]

yeah i see that he can fit in dramatic situations even though he cant permanently die, however, since he is one of the protagonist allies then most people will probably believe that he will come back somehow, its not like a normal killable character where it can be gone for good if killed, when a normal character is seemingly about to die their fans will probably get the "oh no he is going to die!" reaction, its not as easy to have similar reactions with him. however that doesnt mean that he cant be a likeable character, take Krillin for example, lots of   like him even though he usually doesnt contribute much and he is always revived when killed.

sure! after i get the hang of it i might post some works here.
