Description i was imagining a space station that is organic in construction. i think a race that feels comfortable in space and is very experienced would be that way. they would build in a-lot of redundancy. more than is thought of today. also they would not be limited in bringing materials from the surfaces of planets but would build from resources already there.

The design is very original! Β  But to m, look like more something made of rocks that something living.

i think of the tubes and pipes as the living part. the rocky bits are like it added them onto itself

I understand.Well, your work make the remember the Vorlons spaceships, from TV series Babylon 5.Β

i think you made a really good observation and make a good point. just wanted to say that. i love the vorlon ships from bab 5, wow great color and design. i do think living or organic is the future of machines. or at least half and half. that may even be our future too. Β

Β  Yeah, this is a interestig idea. B5 was a great TV series, that finished lefting some mysteries:how was the VorlonΒ΄s homeworld? What happens with Londo Mollari and Lennier? Β  The detail that more upset me:the EarthΒ΄s spaceships had a awful design!

love that series. very epic political scale that few shows actually ever attempt. kind of ground breaking still. yeah poor londo, the classic tragic figure, if the show was going on today i think lond would have his own spin off show. i dont think they could ever do the vorlons because they really represented an essential mystery of the ancient masters of the galaxy. if you did alot of detail on them in the show they might loose that element of mystery. i hate to say that, they were super cool. it'd be gratuitous to do more on them but i'd secretly still love it...

well as for earth space ships thats a whole other topic for another time. maybe 80s tech was not enough to do them justice. i think the design was ok but they needed more detail to make them look good. the shows deadlines were just too tight for that i think.Β

I agree with you about the Vorlons and also the poor Londo. But the design of the Earth spaceships is only foolish! Β  Star Wars is older that B5,and had spaceships with better look.Β

photoshop. sometimes i'll do some 3d blocking when the subject is complex and i need accuracy. but that doesn't happen alot. these days im trying to incorp sketchup block ins more because its fun to and very useful.

I absolutely love this picture! The while organic theme is truly showing and making its tone. It reminds me of species 8472 from Star Trek, with their "bioships" and what not. Overall, amazing piece

this one has gotten some attention. i'm always intrigued by that. i like the idea of organic ships and what not. i kind of think its more interesting. its hard to sell as believable though. its always a challenge when things don't have a-lot of familiarity to them. thanks for your very kind words. im happy you liked it

so the ships get destroyed if the station gets attacked? how would it defend itself?

mikemars In reply to boborly713 [2012-02-26 02:45:46 +0000 UTC]

thats an interesting question! in this concept i imagined that the ships have a thick stone like skins. the station is made up of a bunch of ships all joined to a superstructure. i think if the station got attacked the ships would peel off and attack the attackers in some kind of massive armada. the attackers would be swarmed by a fleet of ships with thick armor. maybe even ramming the attackers using nothing but their large masses and high velocities. that's something that comes to mind for me.

boborly713 In reply to mikemars [2012-02-26 05:46:06 +0000 UTC]

i dont really know why a ship wouldnt have thick armor but that would still imply that it is mean to be a military space station and that the crews would have to stay in their ships to be able to respond to a threat, also the station seems a bit small or maybe the ships are just big? but that would still be a small station for large ships which would make resupply hard. also how is ROCK organic?

with art its about what you bring to it as an observer. if you see more problems than solutions than this isnt something you prefer. in your statements are inherent subjective judgments some of which i just dont share. i guess my advice is to take away what you want to about it.

er i meant that those ships having thick armor seems like a given since they look pretty bulky

seems to fit. sure! got this from the obsidian fleet database, a google search.

Gomtuu is a most extraordinary creature, an enormous spaceborne organism that resembles a 1-kilometer long cocoon. It is, in fact, a living spaceship. Gomtuu is a highly social creature by nature, so much so that it relies on relationships with others for its sense of purpose. Left alone for extended periods of time, it becomes morose, even suicidal.
Gomtuu's race never had a homeworld. Its ancestors formed in deep space out of organic material compressed and buffeted about by shock waves from exploding stars.
