Description On 9X12 Bristol in pencil with ink wash. Color in photoshop.

Here's a test for Spidey. Gonna be doing some art with him, so I'd love to know what you all think of this.

I know this is just a sketch, but I'll note that the hand coming at the viewer is positioned poorly. It doesn't pop from the figure and gets lost in the other red and webbing of Spidey's suit. [It becomes a bit confusing in that whole hand-arm-shoulder-chest area.]

The back leg appears to be broken [and in an unnatural position] from the hip, like McFarlane did, he could get away with it being off because his drawing skills are not as strong as yours, and were based on his "own" rules. You have more traditional drawing skills, thus it sticks out to me more than it would on someone whose work is more stylized.

Last, I think the neck area is a bit overdone compared to the rest of the figure. Just my .02, for consideration.

How should I say this? THIS! This is the type of cool foreshortened Spidey pics I'd like to draw but they don't turn out good enough/

I guess critiques for this are long past due, but what the hey. Makes me think I'm a big shot for a moment hehe .

This is an awesome preliminary drawing. The positioning of the head and the "trigger" hand look spot on to me, and I don't think a classic Spidey swinging through the air pose could be done any better. The foreshortening couldn't look better, either, and definitely shows your skills as a draftsman. The one thing about the left hand that looks inaccurate to me is the area between the index finger and the thumb. It's probably b/c of the foreshortening, but it makes the thumb look longer than the index finger. There is also an indented area near the bottom of his hand which makes it look as if his palm were resting way far off from where it should be. The right leg does look a little off somehow, especially near the calf. And I think the area between the muscles that rest on his left thigh and knee may look a little too long. I agree that the neck looks too "sunken in" compared to the way the form fitting spandex rests everywhere else on the figure. There's no reason to point out the color that goes outside the lines, as this is a test piece. Overall, it is a dynamic action pose that with a little cleaning up would easily be an instant classic cover image or suitable for merchandising.

Looks spot on Mike. I really enjoyed that Mary Jane artwork (with all the primary Spider-Man characters supporting). That was the first time I saw the M.J. character as a viable commerical entity in and of herself, your style/technique really grounds these characters in real world settings and quite frankly-- I think you're cabable of doing something really iconic with a character like Spider-Man.

You can do Peter walking through the campus halls with back-pack slung over his shoulder and you can do Spidey fighting Doc Oc on the Empire state building. My only concern would be who's writing the project?

great action pose. Since you use photos for figure ref. I'd be curious to hear how you deal with photographing extreme action. I think that you mentioned starting to use Poser so maybe that's a way to go.

This is awesome. I like how you have managed to emulate acrylics in photoshop. Except maybe I don't think spiderman is that graceful. He has a unique way of swinging which is quiet crazy and not that graceful as compared to daredevil. Spiderman usually look like he can barely control his swinging with legs and arms going all over the place. Heck, at times he looks like hes flying crotch first into a building. Watta perv I tell ya

Your eye for lighting is impressive! That reflective lighting especially makes him pop right off the page.

A few quick seconds erasing would help this immensely. You went outside the lines a few times, and my following around SM's form is less fun every time my eye stops at colouring outside the lines. Also, the thumb needs to be coloured.

This may just be me, but I'm losing the thumb in the red part of the torso, at least when I look in the thumbnail.

I like this one better than the other, darker, airbrush-y looking one. this is clean, and has that crisp distinctive coloring style that I like so much in your work.

I love it. The pose is great and original. Line detail is really tight. I like the colors you used; the green hue is original and looks good. One critique would be to be careful with the heaviness/unevenness of the ink wash. It's not my favorite type of shading especially when it gets colored it can turn out really "muddy" like alot of Simone Bianchi's work ends up.

smbhax [2009-06-05 19:52:18 +0000 UTC]

I would say slightly too shiny on the blue parts of the legs, and on the black strip around the eyes: the highlight on the blue leggings looks like he's wearing PVC rather than cloth, and the eye highlight distracts from the shape of his mask and head.

The pose, figure, and webbing are stellar. : )

FunkCrusader [2009-06-05 19:47:06 +0000 UTC]

looks great.
the dilema is this: you have an extremely realistic style that works amazingly well. When dealing with an acrobat like spidey, I think its important to really exaggerate the body position past the limit of what a normal body would do. If you took this one and exaggerated the pose a lot more, i think it would pack some serious punch

It's Amazing! It reminds me the way Romita SR. used to do it,it feels very classic, even the mask's visors. Personally I like to design him rather slender but still muscular, kinda like Mark Bagley did him on his earlier work. The only thing I could say is be carefull with the spider symbol, it's kinda easy to end up looking more like a cockroach than a spider.Later!
