Description Saw this while trekking on Matanuska Glacier outside Palmer, AK. It reminded me of my time exploring the slot canyons of southern Utah.

I just called up to Talkeetna to confirm your report about Nagley's burning down and the hotel next door had no idea what I was talking about. Nagley's had a big fire back 1997, but it's still standing and doing business as usual right now. Perhaps you heard about a different roadhouse in Alaska.

Copper Center [link] and Petersville's [link] old original roadhouses both burned this winter. *mikewheels may have thought the place you photographed was the roadhouse at Petersville that I shared photos of on facebook when I got the sad news.

Awwwwwwww you're kidding meee!!?? That's so sad! I used to drive by that roadhouse in Copper Center all the time! Yeah, I was so confused when he told me that and it concerned me enough that I called Talkeetna to find out if it was true! But that's sad about both roadhouses. Thank you for the real story, sad as it was.

No problem. With the news story on the Copper Center Roadhouse burning the article said it was one of the very few remaining original Alaskan roadhouses left. I hope very much to go find and photograph any that might remain this summer.

Great idea!! I visited the Birdhouse south of Anchorage a few times many many years ago. I even tacked one of my personal items on a post in there (if you know the place)...and then IT burned down too, long after I left Alaska. That was sad too!

I visited it for the first time the summer before it burned...

Boy does THIS bring back great memories!! I spent the day climbing and night camping atop a huge glacier north of Matanuska. Those deep blue crevasses were intimidating and the cracking of the ice very deep below our tents reminded me of dull-sounding shot guns going off (Didn't sleep too well THAT night) I loved the whole experience though! Anyway, great shot Mike!

Thanks I bet it was a cold and long night up on that glacier. I saw in your gallery the road house picture. I don't know if you heard but it burnt down this spring. It was a big deal up here sad but I hope they rebuild it.

Yeah, it got cold all right..especially when the wind picked up and rushed down that glacier! I'm sorry, I have no idea which photo in my gallery you're referring to. I don't have any "road house" shots that I know of. Can you look again and tell me what the title is of the photo you're talking about?
