Have you seen this guys other work? Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers? I just got the whole series from my library and watched and I'm itching to talk to someone about it who's already seen it so they'll know what I'm talking about and I can't spoil anything. Where's Lil MAromi's baseball cap?
Really though I think the shading is very effective in this, very atmospheric.

sorry, i've been wanting to watch his other works so badly. I've only seen Tokyo Godfathers though and the whole Paranoia Agent series.

A lot of things about Paranoia Agent are in his first two films and to a lesser degree Tokyo Godfathers. I won't tell you which elements specifically or that would ruin 'Perfect Blue' at the least, if not necessarily 'Millenium Actress.' Suffice to say, a recurring theme his work is how perception distorts reality and how people can become fixated on their own particular view of the world or themselves and allow themselves to be immobilized. The only weak link in the 'Paranoia' series that I saw was the 3rd DVD, which would've been...episodes 8-10 I think. They didn't seem to work too well with the flow that had been established or add very much, in my opinion. You're welcome, I'm kinda surprised there hasn't been more fan art for this, but maybe I just haven't looked very hard...

yeah i thought those episodes seemed out of place to the rest of the series, but i thought it served as a tension cutter, loosen up the seriousness and such. They were a bit more ironic and sillier, they were fun to watch. The episode with the suicidal people reminded me of Tokyo Godfathers. Anyways, i guess those episodes were to build up on lil' slugger's and maromi's growing popularity, which provides a transtion to the final episodes. I've heard one of Satoshi Kon's movies is similar to the fake slugger's story, being stuck in a fantasy world. sounds cool!

Very cool. There are SOME silly things in Millenium Actress, but it's pretty straightforward for the most part and very...melancholy I guess. Bittersweet and absolutely beautiful animation and music.
