My two sweet little degus, Barney and Hikari.
I've had these little guys for around four years now. They're quite challenging pets to keep as they need sand baths, like their close cousins, chinchillas. They're also very prone to becoming diabetic and suffering from many of the conditions that diabetes causes.

Being rodents, their teeth are constantly growing, so they need to keep gnawing on things like wooden chew toys in order to naturally wear their teeth down. Despite being roughly rat-sized, their jaws and teeth are much more powerful, and its advised that they're kept in a completely metal cage.

They're very bright and chatty animals, and use up to fifteen (15) different known sounds to communicate and express themselves. They've also been known too chatter to their owners. Barney regularly squeaks at me when I shift the bedding around in the cage.

I'd recommend them for experienced pet keepers. Definitely not for young children.
