Her leg is going through his cape. And now I can't unsee that. Still one of my favorite pictures. But I can't unsee it.

That's not fair to Emma. We don't even know what happened after he fell in. We do know that she reached for him. It is actually possible that she fell in, too. Also, back then, there were no cops. Jack was a pilgrim. Even that is besides the point, because Emma was maybe seven years old and her older brother fell into the water. If that happened to me, I would flip out and would probably never skate again. I would be scarred for life.
This is also besides the point because, WHAT DID YOU WANT HER TO DO? JUMP IN AFTER HIM? Jack would have died immediately and so would she.

It would scar their parents, but, at least it would show she cared.

And then her parents would be at fault for letting them go at all. Besides, the fact is that it was more dramatic for Jack to remember her calling his name as he fell in. In this case, her not falling in was definitely the best dramatic choice.

So the parents could be at fault. It's true that him remembering her call his name was dramatic, but I still think she should have gone down with him... Her falling in could have led to several different things that might have been better for the movie, meaning the movie would be more suspensful and entertaining.
That really didn't offend me, so that made me think I should take offense...

I don't know....If she had fallen in, I don't think it would have changed the outcome of the story. She lived 300 years ago. Her dying or living would not matter, as she was only a character within a memory. If she had appeared later in the story as a full grown woman or something, I would agree. But as it stands, she doesn't really have a purpose other than that Jack died for her.
Also, having a guy die for his sister who dies anyway would be ridiculously sad for a children's movie, don't you think?
