Description

"Lakanuki" was a B-17F Flying Fortress of the USAAF 8th Air Force, 379th Bomb Group, 526th Bomb Squadron stationed at Kimbolton U.K.

On January 5, 1944 the aircraft was severely damaged by flak on its 18th mission over Germany. The pilot, 1LT Allen Grissom, determined that the damaged aircraft would not be able to make it back to Great Britain and diverted to Sweden where the aircraft crash landed near the town of Trelleborg. The crew survived and were interned in Sweden for the duration of the war.
