16 Stout-necked tail-glider (“Dual Drake;” “Pairdren;” also, rarely, “Fidelity Dragon.”)
The exceptionally rare stout-necked tail-glider is a product of the eclectic breeding practices of House Kaeber. These unique dragons can only be found among Dávanor’s richest noble houses. They can never be discovered in the wild and cannot survive without a regimen of very particular daily care and feeding.
Dual Drakes are always born as twins, conjoined at the tail. They are never born naturally, but rather delivered from their mother via a complex, secret practice closely guarded by House Kaeber breeders. After delivery, the two dragons will remain joined at the tail for up to six months while being fed and nurtured by their breeding team. Breeding itself is conducted very rarely and usually only after meticulous study of both mare and sire’s pedigree. Upon separation, the twins will begin training for messenger service, the duty for which they were created. They are loyal, intelligent, and tough. Dual Drakes are heavily muscled, densely scaled, and have symmetrical rear and forelegs. In the air, they glide. On the ground, they can run with remarkable speed. They have massive, mostly forward-facing eyes that are usually blue, green, or pale lavender. Their senses of hearing and smell are also acute.
Dual Drakes are usually entrusted with messages of extreme delicacy. Unlike the typical messenger dragons of Dávanor, they do not wear letter tubes affixed to the chest or back. Rather, they are typically harnessed with a pair of sturdy clay jars of matching design. One of these jars will contain the message. The other jar will contain the cipher, code, or reference to other cryptographic details that will allow the message to be read. Both Dual Drakes must reach their destination in order the message to properly be delivered. If one of the twins in injured or killed during delivery, the other will instantly return home. These “broken” twins usually do not live more than a matter of weeks without their sibling.
Dual Drakes eat cooked meals and are profoundly picky. Dietary preferences are vast. No two Dual Drakes will fancy the same cuisine and twins often prefer exact opposite types of food. House Kaeber is said to a team of chefs specifically to feed their huge collection of Dual Drakes. These dragons are never lodged with other messenger dragons. They are invariably kept together in the family quarters where they make wonderful companions and pets.
