Read Our Sister Comics!
Martin's Comments: Lot to cover in this one, which is funny since initially it and the page after it were one page; partially for pacing reasons and partially for ease of getting them out decided to split them off, which I definitely think was the right call since while they hit on some similar notes they're pretty clearly distinct from each other.
So yeah, few different character notes to touch on here!
Guess it makes sense to start from the ending here; this is a fairly obvious retcon admittedly, albeit one that I think is kind of excusable since Militant Gold hasn't been running too long and there isn't really anything to actually contradict it. The idea's been batted around between us here and there of having Andy be related to McShay, a character in Wright as Rayne, but it didn't really make sense and she isn't like a super prominent figure anyway, so we never really seriously considered it.
It did hit me at a point though that this is an option we could explore instead, if only because the idea's kind of always been to keep whatever the deal with Dionysus's family is mostly in the dark anyway (note that this is written in such a way as to indicate that not only is his name not Allit but he isn't even related to Andy through that side of his family), and we really liked the concept for both giving one of the Blues kids besides Grant an easily called on connection to the other comics and for just kind of instantly making sense in how to juggle the dynamic between the two of them. Dionysus gets along great with kids and is kind of a colorful, outgoing sort who lives at his own tempo, and that feels like the kind of person Andy could really instantly gel with and just think is really cool. Rather liking the idea of making these two connected and it is definitely something we can see working with in the future in both comics, kind of instantly opens itself up to meshing well with future story ideas on both sides of things.
For anyone who reads MG you did certainly have to be expecting Steven to start hitting on people eventually and hey, that time is now! Do really like that wrinkle with his character - I kind of initially conceived of it because I kind of felt like Steven might come off a bit as the boring everyman of the group without some additional wrinkle to him, and I do think since conceiving of it it's done a lot to really help flesh out additional ideas for the character - and it can be interesting to see how different people react to it, so naturally had to have some of that here. Probably do some more of that before the chapter's out while at it, but in the moment having him set his eyes on Misty and Protocol felt like a couple of pretty natural ones for him to bounce off of.
And hey, it gives us the opportunity to make explicit details we've had in mind for the characters anyway! It's been mentioned here and there that Misty goes on a lot of blind dates, and it's pretty much always been the plan that she's bisexual, but there's kind of just never been any reason to bring that up. Didn't really want to leave it entirely offscreen though so having it worked into this conversation felt like a great way to finally actually directly allude to it.
Then you've got Protocol. Kind of just feels like a logical way to play her, really suits the general theme of her character in finding satisfaction in living her life her own way and going against the whole, "Getting smarter makes you lonelier and bitter," cliche to just have romance not be something she's remotely concerned with, so like getting the chance to come out and say that here as well.
It's a little thing but I do really like the back-and-forth in the third panel, with Eva not actually disagreeing about finding Steven charming. I do feel like the two of them just click together as friends really naturally and they've had a few similar moments within MG so always like doing those little bits of her while finding his constant flirting a bit vexing also not quite being entirely put off by it.
Adam's Comments: Heheh.... Yeah, recall when Martin came up with this idea to make these two related and pitched it to me. My immediate thought process on the idea was "Ehhhh, I dunno abou- Yes. Absolutely." Like he said, they kinda mesh naturally together and after how much fun we had with the Alex and Grant friendship we wanted another way to link the comics together for potential crossovers between Blues and Militant Gold.
Definitely like this idea and wanna play around with it. I really had fun drawing Andy's reaction in the last two panels. Improvised the idea of him leaping into Dionysus's arms for a hug. Nice touch on that is that Dionysus is a string-bean who wasn't expecting a seven-year-old to leap at him, so he's using his telekinesis to support Andy's weight.
And yeah, was very natural having Protocol be ace, and was grateful Martin wrote it in here. Like he said, it's hard to bring up both that and Misty's dating life organically. I really like Protocol's expression in the second panel. Polite but also she's not looking up from tweaks she's doing on her armor.
Speaking of armor, another cute little touch is Misty's line that Steven can't see even a single piece of her body but is asking her out. Her line pointing that out was just a result of Martin noticing that aspect and joking about it then me asking if I could throw it in.
