These guys are from 2nd Infantry Division, you can see two them wearing 2nd ID patches one on the right arm and one on the left. Rangers don't wear unit insignia during missions, plus the equipment is all standard issue not USASOC specific. Cool pic though.

the photographers need a mounted mini gun on their camera. It astounds me how they can take such an epic photo while in the middle of a fire fight.

It's what i call a "concentration face" when your focus is so intense your mind borrows processing cycles from the part of the nervous system that isn't critical (such as keeping a straight face) and feeds it all towards the critical task at hand. Many cultures have recognised the "war-face" as being possessed by the spirits of war which help you to fight and survive. Watch people play video games, you'll see it a lot without worrying about getting hit by stray bullets

Well thats true, but the thing is that what our culture considers beautiful and harmonic doesn't always complies with human nature. I understand the origin of this face expression ,I would probable had it too if some one took a photo of me running. but what i'm saying that if he had a more serious face instead of instance this photo would have been more "beautiful" although some how less authentic.

US Army -- 2d Infantry Division patch is visible on one soldier, but there is no way to tell exacly which brigade or company they're from. Also, I don't see any Ranger tabs on their shoulders... kind of hard to make out much detail. Still a great photo - as real as it gets.
I've never been in Afghanistan. I have worked in several Joint ops with Soldiers while I was in USAF Combat Camera.

the 2nd id patch is his deployment patch so that might not even been his actual unit either.. that could just be who he was with for awhile or even in his last deployment...
