Description Another historical map, showing the Baltic in the year 1517.

By 1517 Sweden had faced several years of political turmoil between those in favour and those against a continuation of the Scandinavian dynastic union. One of those in favour of maintaining the Kalmar Union was the archbishop of Uppsala, Gustav Trolle. The Lord Steward (riksföreståndare) of Sweden , Sten Sture the Younger persecuted him forcefully and besieged the episcopal castle of Almarestäket. As a result, the archbishop called upon the executor of the temporal authority, Christian II of Denmark, to defend the Catholic church. In a badly planned campaign, Christian II launched a naval expedition against the Swedish capital of Stockholm with the intent of breaking through to Almarestäket and liberate Trolle.

The Danish army, however, was defeated at the village of Vädla outside of Stockholm and Gustav Trolle subsequently had to surrender and go into captivity.

It would, however, not be the last attack on Sweden undertaken by Christian II.

Beautiful map, but I'm pretty sure Palanga was part of Lithuania in 1517. The Teutonic Order had gone to great lengths to connect their Prussian and Livonian domains.

I like your maps.

Is it possible you mislabled the island in th Kattegat? It's not Anholt, but Læsø. Anholt is much smaller and more to the south.

It's very possible. Indeed I think I've made that mistake in all of my maps so far! Thanks for pointing it out

Thank you, I'm happy to hear you say so! Like ChairmanGab wrote, Mazovia was only incorporated into Poland proper some years later

This map is of 1517 and Mazovia became was integrated into the Kingdom of Poland in 1526 so here it's still effectively a vassal
