Description
When she finally had stopped laughing and came down to the shuttle bay the grin was still planted on her face; even more when she saw James kneeling on the floor and muttering Spanish curses under his breath.
“I know for sure that this won’t work,” she said loud enough for him to hear it.
“Yeah, I figured,” was his disgruntled reply.
Ella snickered and came closer placing her hands on his waist, when she was close enough and planting a kiss on his chest. “Okay, show me where you have seen him last and I’ll show you how to get him out of his hiding.” She looked up at him and smiled. Ella was sure this would be fun. And she was already wondering if it would work at all.
He raised a hand and hinted to the corner behind the work bench in his little part of the shuttle bay he had been kneeling in front of. “The little shit has hid itself between the crates over there.”
Ella furrowed her brows annoyed, “I told you, you’re not supposed to call him like that.” This sentence urged a small déjà vu into her mind. Her telling him that he isn’t supposed to call her Commander anymore. And Ella already knew that she was fighting a lost cause about calling Hamster anything different than “little shit”. And she also knew that at some point, if James did it frequently enough she would start doing it as well. She almost grinned, when she took James’ hand.
“Come. “ She tugged gently at his arm and led him over to the corner he had shown her. “Sit,” she said to him, pointing at the floor, while she herself was already sitting down.
“On the floor?” He looked at her like she had told him to walk on his hands. Ella smiled and nodded. He looked at her for another moment and then eventually sank down to the floor beside her with raised eyebrows and a face that showed he wasn’t actually sure if she maybe had lost her mind.
With a light chuckle Ella took out a small plastic bag of the pocket of her hoodie and put it between her crossed legs and fished a bit of the food out of it, placing it between them and the corner on the floor.
James watched her when she leaned back on her hands and smiled. “And now what?Waitin’?”
She looked at him and nodded. “This might take some time, I hope you aren’t in a hurry. And no talking. He doesn’t know you yet, so he won’t come out if you’re scaring him.” She smiled and looked at his expression. He clearly had no idea what she was talking about. But Ella was also sure he would when this worked eventually.
It took time, like she said. And more than once, James asked her what she hoped would happen. Ella realized he couldn’t believe that the little guy would come out on his own if you were just patient enough. “God, James,” she laughed quietly. “You have waited months for me to come to terms, but you are not able to wait a few minutes for a hamster?”
“See the difference?” he asked her, raising his hands. “You,” he raised his right a bit more. “The … hamster,” now his left. His eyebrows raised and a grin on his lips it was obvious what he meant. But he explained nevertheless, again raising his right hand: “Worth waiting for,” then again his left, “… not even sure why it would be worth waiting for.”
Ella chuckled lightly. “You’ll see, it’s worth your time, she grinned eventually. She knew it would. And even if the unlikely case would happen and he wouldn’t like it, she already knewof making him.
“Hope the little… guy doesn’t take too long.” He grinned and Ella grinned back, when he almost had stumbled over the name he’d given Hamster. A moment of silence in the air they just sat there. “Why did he come here at all?” James asked after the moment.
Ella shrugged. “Have wondered about it myself. The only explanation I have is, that he had found you scent on me while I was visiting him lately and just followed it. Maybe he was curious who you are.” She smiled, but that wasn’t even a complete joke. “And since my scent is probably most prominent around here, apart from my cabin,” she said with a meaningful glance, “he settled in.”
“What do you mean by ‘settled in’?” James looked at her almost alarmed. Like the imagination of having Hamster around here in the shuttle bay was a frightening thought.
“I think, even if I would bring him back to the sub deck, he would come back here as soon as he dares to.” She dropped her gaze and sighed. “Before we started being together, I went down there a lot. Hiding from everyone, trying to get my head straight and clear again. After Jack had left and the Alliance had cleaned up, there was just my scent down there apart for the occasional visitor fixing something. With us being a thing, I brought your scent as well. I suppose he associates your scent now with me and found himself a place where he thinks it’s stronger than down there.” Ella shrugged and looked back at him.
James nodded after a moment and placed one of his hands on her thigh squeezing it lightly. “So you really think he’s gonna stay here?”
She nodded, glad that he didn’t pick up the trail she had placed in front of him, leading to much darker topics than the damn hamster and placed her hand on his. “And putting him back into the cage is no option, to be honest. He can take care of himself and needs more space than that small thing.”
“Don’t get me wrong, Lola, but ain’t it a bit dangerous here for him. Me, my feet, the rest of the crew walking around here, the shuttle starting… things like that?”
She nodded. “Yeah I’ve already thought about it. I know he can’t stay here. The only solution would be my cabin, but when you don’t like him here, you’ll probab…” she trailed off when she saw out of the corner of her eyes a movement and looked at the hamster and how he picked up the food and hid it in his cheek pouches. After that he just sat there in front of them. His nose wiggling in the direction of either of them, changing from right to left, as if he wasn’t sure what’s happening right now.
Ella grinned and took her hand from James, taking out some more food for the hamster and placing it on her knee. The hamster watched her and took already a few steps towards her, before he suddenly stopped and lifted his nose, directing in James’ direction. The little guy seemed confused for a few moments, before he eventually scurried towards Ella. He climbed up her leg and sat on her knee stuffing more food into his pouches. Ella smiled warmly and stroke with the tip of her index finger lightly over his head.
She couldn’t see it, because she was focused alone on the hamster on her knee, filling his mouth with food for later, but James just watched her, her expression, the gleam in her eyes and the warmth of her smile. He had seen something almost like this, but not quite. And he realized with a smile that he would either have a long way to go or would never see it because small and fuzzy was something he definitely wasn’t. And sitting on her knee was something he’d better won’t ever do either. She was even more beautiful than usual. Relaxed and just comfortable. Almost like after they had sex, just different. Almost happy.
Ella lifted her head eventually and looked at him, the smile still on her face. The way he looked at her made her blush a bit, but in a comfortable way. She didn’t say anything, her eyes just telling James to play along, with whatever she was about to do. When she was sure he wouldn’t say anything she slowly took his hand and turned it around, placed some more of the hamster food on his palm and positioned his hand beside her knee. Hamster now just would have to walk over to grab the food. Not with just his forelegs, but his whole body would have to walk over into James’ hand to reach it. Ella looked back at James and smiled her lips forming the word “wait”. And so he did, almost a bit excited what would happen.
Hamster smelled the food right away and looked where it was. He took a few tiny steps towards James’ hand, but stopped right in front of it, realizing he would have to leave the safe Area of Ella’s body and enter the unknown of James’. Hamster looked back to Ella and then again to James, like he was actually asking if it was okay. That was nonsense of course but it seemed like it and made Ella smile even more. He was such a yellow-belly and even food could not lure him, if he’d never smelled the scent of a person before. But he had caught James’ scent before, on Ella, it had been what had lured him here. And so, after a few more seconds of hesitating, taking another step, waiting again, if anything happens, Hamster bridged the space between him and the desired food. He quickly picked most of it up an stuffed it as fast as possible to the rest in his mouth before he took a last look at Ella and James and ran off into his hiding.
A light chuckle left her lips, while James still stared at the gap between two crates where the hamster had vanished. “See, that is the way to catch him.”
“I don’t see how you caught him,” he said with a grin. “I just saw him running away after he grabbed all the food.”
Ella laughed. “Yah, I trained him well.” She nudged his shoulder with hers playfully, before she smiled at him. “This’ll work every fucking time. He’s too greedy to deny any offered food.”
James now laughed as well. Okay, if ya say so. But what were you about to say, before he crawled out of his hole? Something along ‘if I don’t like him here, I probably..’?”
Ella sighed. “Oh yeah, that. Well you made pretty sure you don’t wanna have him here, and the only other solution I can think of where he would be safer and would have the mix of our scents, if that’s what led him here, is eventually my cabin. But, yeah, since you are staying up there now too, I think it’s something we should talk about before I make a decision.” She seemed suddenly oddly precarious. She never had any conversation like this before. Being a kid she just had decided what would happen and after that she never had to make any compromises, because she had never actually shared a place with anyone. All she knew was that whatever would happen about Hamster he should be comfortable about it as well. He was sleeping, or even living up there with her, so he had a saying in this.
James chuckled ad wrapped an arm around her shoulder, pulling her a bit closer. “Lola, are you asking me if you are allowed to take your hamster up to your cabin?” He turned his head and kissed the side of her head.
She sighed again. Ella had feared he wouldn’t understand her intention. She turned her head and looked at him. “You’re not gonna make this easy, huh?” Closing her eyes for a moment, she drew her breath and then looked at him, a serious expression on her face. “When I suggested a matching bed and sleeping rhythm would be a good start, I didn’t have in mind that I just wanted to have you around if I needed a good fuck. I did that because I wanted to have you close to me, to.. share this little room I have up there, the small piece of privacy…” She trailed off, and turned around, now kneeling and facing him. “I wanted to have you up there with me, because I would miss you bad if you weren’t and … “ She sighed. “As far as I know that is what couples do, when they have to decide about shit that is affecting both of them or the place they live at together… I love you, James and I don’t wanna fuck it up because of the hamster.” Somewhere during her awkward speech she had started to blush and she hoped imploringly that he would finally say something so she wouldn’t have to say more.
Lucky Ella, James cupped her face with his hands and pulled her close for a kiss, before she could think of anything more to say. He smiled at her when he pulled back a little bit. “I love you too,” he whispered. “How big is the chance you forget about me, when that little shit is living up there with.. us.” Even for him this seemed to be an odd concept. Something he hadn’t seen this way until now. Or the fact Ella had said it made the difference; she didn’t know, but loved his little faltering.
“Not big, to be honest,” she laughed and rolled her eyes the next moment she realized she had not called him out on the name he had given the hamster. Dammit!
He grinned. “In that case, I even promise to try my best not to step on him.”
She laughed and kissed him again. She was glad, not only about the hamster. But this had been probably the first decision of them, being a couple. And she didn’t give a shit how small it had been. She’d never made any decision like this. For Ella this was a big thing. Also the realization in speaking it out loud why she wanted to have him up there. She wanted to live with him. Not that she would be able to vocalize it that clearly in the near future, but deep down inside her she knew it. And she would try her best to make it happen. She wanted that damn future that she saw when she looked into his eyes.
