ruby was raised by a colony of squirrels who found her very odd. she couldn't climb trees, she never ate acorns, and she always hopped around instead of playing with other squirrels. they first thought she was just taking her time, but as ruby got older they noticed she remained the same.
eventually, ruby and the colony of squirrels learnt something, ruby was a rabbit. that explains her behavior and looks.
while some squirrels accepted ruby for the rabbit she is, others acted as if she wasn't trying hard enough and using her rabbitness (as they called it) as an excuse.
