In my highschool we study Portugal and Spain together during determinate periods in History class, then we focus on Spain but Portugal is important too. And during the colonialism we had to learn Portugal's colonies as well as Spain's, England's and France's.
Portugal was very powerful too! Spain and Portugal are too close. The decisions that made one affected the other in many cases!

I think you should have placed france in the middle. You know, catholics for one side, protestants for the other side, and France (influenced by both churchs, and, indeed, between the rest of nations of West Europe) in the center. Is just an opinion, of course.

My logic was England in the middle since he had the biggest territory. Then I wanted to put Spain and France next to him as the "famous rivals", and play with Portugal and Netherlands turning their backs on them (mostly because Netherlands took so long to reveal his face, and Portugal's is still a mystery so I had to think of a way to hide it in the picture, but also because their colonial history is around the same places.) I really like your reading of it, and it's a good alternative! Thank you!!!
