You are so right. Some people get into big trouble out there. I've seen some crazy stuff. I would have to agree that both our transportation modes are on the adventurous side. You have many types of perilous possibilities. For me, the thing that scares me most when I'm out there is big weather, oh and bears! Β

Remember--"What doesn't kill you will make you stronger---except for bears, bears will kill you!"

Moose are only really dangerous in rut season though. Β Bears are potentially dangerous all the time...if you are not wilderness smart.

Yeah, it's been a while since I read that but there was a reason he was more wary of the moose. I think because if a bear is across the meadow and he senses you he takes off the other way. He said the moose can run 40 MPH--About 45 KPH and might just decide to get rid of you.
He had a young cow moose that decided to live with him though and on a winter night she would go to the warmest sheltered side of his cabin and lean against the wall. As she grew he said eventually the whole cabin would tilt a little when she did that.
One dark night as he ran to his "special" tree he ran smack into her side. His first thought was, "I am dead." She merely grunted at him so he apologized and beat a hasty retreat.

That is a very cool story. I enjoyed reading your message very much. Yes, moose are like big trucks but with very poor vision and good speed! But they are quite docile most of the time. They can get overwhelmed with black flies, mosquitoes and ticks. Some of them get so infested that they become emaciated and can perish. I have seen them wading shoulder deep in lakes just to get some relief. Β They have a really hard life. Β To be safe you just shouldn't scare them, be around in their rut time or when the cows have little ones with them... although I have been around them with their young ones and if you make it known to them that you are not a threat they are fine. Β What I have learned, in my humble experience, is that it is all about your intention in the wilderness. Β If you act like a well mannered and respectful guest chances are you will be treated the same way by nature. The people I have seen get into trouble have just acted in poor judgement and with bad wilderness manners.Β
