Trying out a bit more shading and whatnot, but geeze, what a pain with only the trackpad on my laptop. I feel that a tablet is in order, but alas, I fear that I may not have sufficient funds. Such is life.My first version had Philomena racing Dash, but unfortunately I didn't get the perspective right on her so I scratched it for this (didn't want a version I was unsatisfied with floating around on the internets, as that seems to happen pretty fast).

I can't think of anything besides Rush lyrics after reading that title! Canterlot is so rad and I love the idea of a night picture of the castle. So this is before Nightmare Moon is turned back into Luna?

Oh dear, you're completely right. I never associated the "Mare in the Moon" with Nightmare Moon's imprisonment, considering how it takes up about half of the surface of the moon and I didn't expect her prison to be that enormous. Maybe Celestia put it there as a reminder to all of the other ponies not to get any funny ideas and try an uprising.
Alas, the Mare in the Moon makes the moon so much more interesting to look at, I think they should keep it around as a reminder for Luna so that she doesn't have too much "fun".

I read a fanfic recently that included mentioning Luna not liking how bright the moon was anymore and planning on changing the way the moon looks. It's totally my headcanon now, I love the idea. It makes sense that having the way something as "stable" as the moon's appearance changing so drastically would make people/ponies uneasy AND I love the idea that as the Princess of the Night and in charge of the moon that she could make such changes.
I do agree with you about it being more interesting to look at with having a "mare in the moon" - it becomes one of the many fun ponified details in the series.

do you recall what said fanfic was called? the funniest thing is that every time I absentmindedly look at a full moon I expect the craters to at least faintly resemble the mare in the moon, and am disappointed each and every time that they do not. I think that ponifying the moon should be next on NASA's "to do" list.

It's the only mlp fanfic I've ever read: [link] It's a Prince Blueblood-focused groundhog day-inspired story. It's very well written, funny, witty, and develops the characters in a wonderfully canon way while also giving them additional fanon depth (e.g. the details about luna). The part about Luna is only a small part and it's not until halfway through the 2nd chapter, though.

Thanks for getting back to me on that. I'll definitely give it a read, I've been avoiding the longer fanfics and trying to ease into fanficdom by reading some of the 1-3 page one-shots, but I'm finally at the point where I feel that I could tackle something a bit larger. Alas, it looks like The Best Night Ever isn't finished yet, but hopefully reading an incomplete story won't drive me completely insane.

hmm, maybe it is, I just saw how recently it had been updated and assumed it wasn't. I've just heard some people complain about getting halfway through longer fics that are incomplete and then having to wait around for the periodic updates.
