A personal piece from, oh I don't know, half a year ago perhaps? I had a hankering for drawing some creepy, stringy, fleshy lumps, so that's what I drew. No awesome backgrund story here, but hey, that just means everyone is free to cook up their own stories in the pot of imagination. : B

My idea of a story would be that mankind invented a plague or something that wiped out a large amount of live then thousands of years later after the world has finally healed its self it's starting to escape again

I never thought I'd use the phrase, but this is 'whimsically dark'. I love the similarity in the girl's costume and that of her steed, and the animal's expression. The ambiguous time period and tech level raise many wonderful questions, as do the nature of the 'infection' and the implied intellectual and emotional state of the animal.
This is so beautiful. Would you mind terribly if I wrote a story based on this? Crediting you and linking back here, of course?

My back story: When the mining asteroid was destroyed a fragment of it containing the unknown microorganisms crashed onto Earth. It was taken to a research facility deep in the woods, But just like the mining colony, the research facility was also over-run by the microorganisms ferocity and ability to combine to make larger creatures.

...Now, one hunter plunges into the alien forest in hopes that there are still some left alive.

Note:My back story is more like a sequel to the game "Canary"--> [link]

The amount of detail is amazing - I love the concept and the colors - the lights on the animal is an interesting touch.

I've always been rather fond of this kind of mixture of sci-fi and fantasy elements.
More than of traditional fantasy in any case.

I like that her steed looks odd but still believable enough to seem like a actual ungulate that might exist in this world.

Heh, everyone else seems to have that association too, but I have to admit I haven't seen that movie. I watched "Spirited away" as a kid, and got so creeped out that I haven't dared to watch any more of Miyazaki's creations. Except Totoro, that one wasn't quite as scary. x3

Nature decayed, but lost the powers which made it rise like a phoenix. What could have happened? Man, that happened. The fleshy animals with, or as you might mention it, without brains stopped caring. They stopped taking care for their Mother, Mother Earth. But the mother of life was not planning on her own demise. As a last lash out for survival, she started to feed and take humans. First dying ones, unconscious ones followed but nothing stood in her way to take anyone. The humans had viruses and other dangerous attachments, but not a certain death to her. Evolution comes in many forms but shape is the most obvious one. And so, branches and vines started to become flesh, infected flesh that fed on life. Nature became a parasite. A parasite to her own children.

Humans however, have the stubborn habit of trying not to die themselves. Panicked and scared as they were, an elite was formed to face the eye of danger. They had no names, no family, no real lives. They were the hallow outcasts of society, taken to become heroes. Heroes or nature's meal, of course.

Expeditions were formed on a regular basis to find a solution for the war for life. The expeditions meant that there would go a lot of humans and their animal helpers missing. The Search Team, a part of the elite, was especially designed to retrieve whatever there was to retrieve. Their gear wasn't fitted with the most modern of weapons, it would be a futile effort against Mother Earth. The weaponry was enough to keep wild beasts at bay and if needed, their own teammates who had gone mentally ill. Transport was only possible by their beloved partners and pets, the only animals who would stay sane in the infected forests.

"Another one" he sighed. There had been gone so many already this week. The area was foggy and the light he had with him were his only defense against blindness at the moment. He looked at the huge tree, or what was left of it, in front of him. "If he's been taken away that far, it wouldn't make any sense for me to go there." He turned around, facing his majestic transport. "He's dead."
