Description The New Shadow was an incomplete sequel (approximately 13 pages) to The Lord of the Rings that J.R.R. Tolkien quickly abandoned. It is set in the time of Eldarion, Elessar's son, approximately 105 years after the Fall of the Dark Tower. In it is mentioned the Dark Tree, and two characters: Saelon and Borlas.

Borlas was the son of Beregond, the captain who saved Faramir from being burned by Denethor. He lived in Pen-arduin, which may have been in Emyn Arnen. Sometime in the past he caught a young man, Saelon, stealing an apple from his garden. He scolded him describing his behavior as orc work but took the boy under his wing becoming his master. Years later, he learned through him of the growing shadow among Men and the possibility of a secret cult worshiping the old enemies of the world.

Saelon and Borlas from the New Shadow (it's in the picture's description)

It was meant to symbolize the Orc cult in Minas Tirith in the shadow

Possibly. It's an old picture and I don't really remember if it was meant to be a random cult member or Herumor, but it could very well be him.

Heh, pity the story was never finished... though it would not turn out to end well for that new shadow whatever it was!Β

And your drawing is very.. metaphorical!

His name was Herumor, and he was probably a "normal" human: lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Herumor_%2…

Beautiful colors!
T obad Tolkien never picked that story up, but I think it is great that it inspired you to such a nice artwork

I kinda agree with his own reason for it, it would be a nice idea for a fanfic, but not for an official sequel to something as epic as LotR:

"I did begin a story placed about 100 years after the Downfall, but it proved both sinister and depressing. Since we are dealing with Men, it is inevitable that we should be concerned with the most regrettable feature of their nature: their quick satiety with good. So that the people of Gondor in times of peace, justice and prosperity, would become discontented and restless β€” while the dynasts descended from Aragorn would become just kings and governors β€” like denethorΒ  or worse. I found that even so early there was an outcrop of revolutionary plots, about a centre of secret Satanistic religion; while Gondorian boys were playing at being Orcs and going around doing damage. I could have written a 'thriller' about the plot and its discovery and overthrow β€” but it would have been just that. Not worth doing."

What I regret much more is that the fragments of Aragorn's hunt for Gollum that Tolkien had written got lost...

I think everything unfinished and lost from Tolkien is sad, since I love to read all of his works and would love to know as much as possible about everything .

Thank you! I can't really "win", I'm the only one participating in the Art cathegory, and besides, I'm the one who offers the prizes, so it's more an inspiration than a contest to me...
