Description 1000 A.D.
Dawn of the Second Millennium
In this world, the Caliphate did not do nearly as well, taking Iraq but being unable to properly conquer Iran and getting repulsed by the Byzantines. In the 800s, the Byzantines fought a series of aggressive wars with the Germanic kingdoms in Africa and Europe, doing quite well. By the 900s, the Byzantines had expanded back into the Mediterranean, holding Spain, the Maghreb, and Southern Italy. The Papal States remained as a buffer between them and the Frankish Empire. The said Frankish Empire, with fewer resources, did not prevent Northern France from becoming Anglicized, and by the year 1000, England and Northern France are a united kingdom, and the Danish still hold extra peninsular territory on the continent. Aquitaine has become an independent kingdom and vassalized the Lusitanian Kingdom in the North of Iberia. Poland has expanded into Rus’ and the Iraqis have at last defeated the Iranians, though Yemeni Arabia has long since been lost. Far to the West, an Ireland less troubled by Vikings pulled into wars elsewhere has managed to discover Greenland, from whence Irish Monks will begin a slow process of Catholicizing and (accidentally) protecting the North Americans against Old World diseases(1) – which will have many consequences in 279 years when, the Roman Empire having long ago split between East and West (Iberia), it stumbles onto the New World…

(1) Read: Introducing pigs and letting them get the diseases the slow-burn, doesn't burn society to the ground way like in the Old World
