Description Mono Lake in California

------------------------------

If you have the time I would like to know...
-How are my colors? Should the pillars be darker or lighter? Are colors of the sunset interesting and well blended? Is there anyway I can improve it?
-How is the lighting?
-How is my composition?
-Is there anything else you see that I can improve on?

first of all i would like to say that this is a remarkable image. i really like this, and if i were you i would definitely print it and hang it somewhere. landscapes always have something calming to look at, especially this one.

-colours: i think your colours are just right, very well saturated but not overly saturated. that's always a danger when shooting such a beautiful sunset. i also like it how the colours in the water are deeper than the ones in the sky. that creates some interest in the foreground.

lighting: i think it is well exposed. there's some detail in the pillars, but they are not important enough to receive too much attention. i think you've made a great compromise by not going for a full silhouette without any detail, and overexposing and losing the great colours in the sky and water.

composition: the curve of the pillars works well, it leads you nicely in the photo, and the shape of the hills in the background seems to be reflected by them.

this all is just short for great photo

Hi there

I'm Chris, from :icon-the-photo-critics:

First off, I'd like to say that this really is a wonderful photo.

The colours - really nice. The purple is quite a sexy shade. They all blend excellently, and you have a nice temperature. And you placed the yellow of the sunset right in the middle - wonderful choice. I don't really see anywhere to improve when it comes to the colours themselves. They're one of my favourite parts of the image.
But the pillars, this is actually something I don't like. You ask if they should be lighter or darker. I say either way. In this case I would say lighter one - because its a sunset so there isn't alot of light on the pillars at all. Second - I see you used an aperture of f/4. I'm not sure thats the best choice in aperture; you were shooting such a large subject, I really think you need an aperture of about f/13 or so.

Which brings me to the lighting - for the most part its actully pretty good. But I'll start with the bad the pillars, again there's just a little bit of light so it makes me want to see more, but if you just go in, and darken the shadows, you'll get a really sexy silhouette thing going on. Other than the light, the lighting is fantastic. Again, the colours, in the water in the sky are really just brilliant.

Composition - I think you executed this aspect very well, too. The way the pillars in the foreground, lead my eye into the center of the photo which is the center of the sunset - really really great job there. This is something alot of photographers, including myself, don't have the presence of mind to do. So I gotta take my hat off for the hat. I like how you left the right horizontal third open. The inverse of the norm.

There's only one improvement/suggestion I can really make. If you waited until the sun had set. And you had a tripod you could set up some really really cool night shots. And I forget how its done, but I've seen shots that were taken in the dead of night with cranked up ISO's and shutter speeds of like 60 seconds. And the shots come out like 2 o'clock in the afternoon. You might want to look into that. Haha but this shot is nice.

So overall I'd say 8.2/10

Thanks for the well thought out critique, I really appreciate it. I am going to try and play with the lighting on the pillars and making them darker.

great shot.
nice composition, color tone, and for me, i'd prefer to darken the dark areas.
and maybe, you will get a better pict. if you took this shot higher than this. "what for?" -> to make the pilars clear, and you will also get better view of the mountains.
anyway, great job buddy

cheers

So In my opinion, there's 2 ways to approach something like this.
1) the silhouette
2) Filled Flash Detail.

1) you whould darken the dark areas and just let the silhouette speak for themselves.

2) if you really wan to show details, I would do 2 things, a. shoot this in HDR, b. use a off camera flash to lighten up the stuff (manually take your flash, aim it and fire). It'll give you some details in the forground and alld your hrd to be less surreal when you blend them. In my opinion, the less painting looking the HDR the harder and more success it is.

Cheers

Thank you for the advise. Unfortunately I don't have an off camera flash. I am still learning HDR, and yeah it is hard to make it look less like a painting. I will look into darkening the silhouette.
