Description The idea for this picture struck sudden last night and took quite a few retries before I got a decent result; translating the original style into something more realistic was very difficult at times.

This picture reminds me a tiny bit of the (far superior) work of Adam Ross in terms of concept. It is an interesting departure from what I think I normally create.

I don't think I have seen a better rendition of the character. You definitely capture the feel of the original design and style without being beholden to it.

I really must thank you for the very generous compliment; I love the style of Akihiko Yoshida, and while I don't have his level of skill I am glad that people enjoy my brand of homage.

fantastic work! I've been trying to get this sort of dynamic lighting into mmy work. What kind of photoshop brush settings did you use? (If you dont mind me asking)

Thanks for the praise, it is always appreciated. Anyways for this picture (and many others that I have done) I rely on my trusty old brush which is basically Oil Heavy flow small tip. I mess around with opacity, flow, and add shape dynamics to get it just right, but there is not much else to it. Low opacity works wonders for lighting on armor/shiny things since it easy to build and band the gradations.

I also found early light-rendering success messing with the dodge tool since it severely lightens your brush strokes (just make sure to preserve the original layer since it is destructive.) Sorry if you already knew this stuff but I was not sure what you were familiar with. Good luck with your work.

Thanks! That's really helpful, Whilst I have some idea about what bits and bobs do on the brush settings menu, it's always good to get extra pointers from someone more experienced artists. I particularly appreciate the bits about low opacity and small tips, Right now I am using a couple of custom texture brushes and playing around with transfer settings.

I do need more practice with the shape dynamics as I find that it's hard to manage sometimes. Colour dodge is an absolute boon for my colour/tone discovery though I hadnt thought about using it in the early sketching... Thanks!
Keep up the fantastic work!
