I forgot to ask the last time - was this for an assignment? If so, how long were you given to work on it?

Nah, I did it for a friend of mine to auction off in a fund raiser. It took about one evening for the bulk of it and a couple days to do touch ups.

That's not a mountain lion; it's obviously a cougar! hehe This is an amazing drawing. I especially like figure/ground play with the leaves around the edges.

I love this. It's so simple and so powerful. Dreamlike and yet realistic, it's softened and abstracted but not so far that the subject loses recognition. More in the background and those neat little silhouette leaves that you either reserved or lifted. Gorgeous!

Just gorgeous and really true to life. I love the glossy eye in amongst all that texture.

Lions are my favourite animals.

Mechanical pencil? Seriously? This is so professional looking! I'm tempted to get some watercolor paper for this effect. I love the soft white outlines and the whiskers are so realistic. The branches are a nice touch.

aww, I just want to snug that nose.... with the cute whiskers and stuff...
Watercolour paper is also a fantastic base to work on with compressed charcoal. Gives a lovely mark, especially when you work with an eraser.

You know, I'm curious, how do you make your graphite shading so smooth? Finger-smudging? Certain paper type? Paper-blenders?

This is gorgeous. I'm loving the contrast.

Light shading in layers. Sometimes I smudge with my finger... but not often. The oils from my hand can mess up the values.

Ahh. Yeah, that makes sense.

Lovely shades and details. How'd you blend the mechanical pencil? It looks so smooth and, well, not-smudged.

I just built up layers of light shading till it got as dark as I wanted.

It looks great! I've never been able to keep my graphite work that clean... I almost inevitably end up with fingerprints somewhere on it.

Amazing, I love the pose and the way you captured this animal in your drawing that is, the face is so sad and heartbroken, I adore your life like drawing, very impressive work on the shading.
