Appreciate the advice, however, I always give high ratings due to how impressed I am with the detail, but if you ever want me to see if there is room for improvement and spot any flaws in your pieces, I'll try to do that from now on.
Again, thanks for the advice.

The first thing my mind jumps to is that the Crystal Heart failed or was sabotaged, or otherwise lost the ability to support the barrier that keeps the ice and snow out of the Crystal Empire. As a consequence, the arctic has reclaimed the Empire and its citizens have been forced to abandon their home and cross the frozen north to seek a new home in the rest of Equestria.

Here's my theory as to what's going on:
The Crystal Heart has, for some reason, expired---it can't be used anymore, and they need to form a new Crystal Heart. It can be done, but it'll take the magic of three alicorns to pull it off. Celestia and Luna are doing their best to hold back the snowstorm that's turning the Crystal Empire's eternal spring into an eternal winter, so they can't help---but Flurry Heart can!
It's a frigid journey across the tundra to reach the crystal quarry where they can find the right kinds of stone to make a new crystal heart, and Flurry Heart is worried---both about the cold and about whether she'll have what it takes to make a new Crystal Heart. After all, the whole empire is depending on her! Her mother is trying to reassure her.
Starlight and Sunburst are trying to puzzle out just what will be necessary to find the quarry, and what'll have to be done once they're there---everything looks different in the snow, and some landmarks might be buried under the drifts already!
...Probably I need to work on my storytelling...

If they're not going to war, then I'm not sure why they have spears and armor... Maybe to fend off dangerous animals? I'd say something happened to the Crystal Empire and they had to leave, and somewhere not far behind are the crystal ponies, following them. They are in search of a new kingdom for the ponies to live in. And they can't just fly or use magic to get there because many of the crystal ponies don't have wings or horns. So they're trekking through the snow - which came as a result of the empire being destroyed (perhaps this is an AU in which Flurry actually did destroy the Crystal Empire?) - and looking for a new place to rebuild.

Assuming that you reffer to Sunburst, It's not a spear. It's a magic staff.
I said that they're not going to war cause I was worried that it would be the first thing people will think of.

I think the war story is kind of overrated anyway.. So I wouldn't have said that xD
But that still doesn't really explain why they have armor on

This is a really cool piece. The setting gives a great, additional sense of worry to the already uneasy feeling the ponies are giving us. The best part is is this image intentionally leaves itself open to any (plausible) interpretation.
I can't help but think the stallions grew beards for extra warmth.

Lovely piece. It seems as if they all have to evacuate because of the Sombra war we saw in the future episode list. Possibly the Royal Sisters were defeated. Maybe Sunburst gets to be a type of Gandalf here!

The first theory sounds war-ish, but hear me out
Theory 1: An evil necromancer ram named Emperor Grogar, along with his army of Wendigos has succeeded in taking over the Crystal Empire by by corrupting the Crystal Heart into an dark energy power source source , freeing the Umbrum from their prison, kill the Royal Sisters and Spike , exile everypony, including the Mane 7, The Royal Couple, Flutter Heart, and Starburst, to the Frozen North, and finally teleport the entire empire to the another dimension known as
Umbram Saeculi ( Latin for "Shadow World"). While Twilight and Starlight conjured up houses, and igloos for the crystal ponies, suddenly citizens of Ponyville, yaks, griffins, diamond dogs and other creatures starting popping up out of thin air and landing on the cold hard snow. They explain that Grogar and the Umbrum have already succeed in taking over other kingdoms, banishing its citizens to the Frozen North and teleporting the kingdoms to Umbram Saeculi . Sunburst then came up with a plan to travel to Unicornia, an technology advance civilization found on the eastern part of Equestria. which held the scrolls and spellbooks containing spells created Starswirl the Beared,Clover the Clever,Meadowbrook and other great wizards and warlocks, in hopes that they can get permission to use the ancient spells, along with Unicornian tech to build a Stargate to travel to Umbram Saeculi, defeat Grogar and the Umbrum, and take back all the stolen kingdoms.
Theory 2: Eternal winter seems to have come to Equestria and has already frostbitten many crops, lands and buried many homes and cities such has Canterlot,Manehattan,Appleloosa,Ponyville etc. under mountains and mountains of snow. Princess Celestia send the Mane 7, and Sunburst to the Frozen North to see if there is a connection to the wintering weather. Our heroes manage to made it to the tundra are, where it's inhabitant by penguins, polar bears, seals, snow ponies etc.. During their visit they discovered that the King Charlatan an emperor penguin that rules over the Frozen North, has created a tractor beam in order to move the moon into a position that will change the climate during the summer months, which as a result will create a ice age for he fears of his own empire melting away and wants to keep his fellow arctic citizens alive and well.
P.S.

I have to admit, this piece is amazing!
This feels like an alternate ending for the events from the Season 6 premiere, where the Frozen North or the Windigos won, and the Crystal Empire population had to leave their home to find somewhere else to live, and with the Equestrian flag sticking out of the snow there, one wonders if the Frozen North or the Windigos influence spread to the rest of Equestria as well, burying it in an endless winter...
This is definitely one I'm putting in my Favorites!

Yeah, it really drives home the point of what Twilight, her sister-in-law, her B.B.B.F.F., her niece, Sunburst, and Starlight are doing as they look for a new home or something with that long line of ponies behind them.
Also, you're very welcome!

This makes me think of Dragon Age Inquisition after you flee from Haven and wanders up in the mountains to find a new place.
But I guess this is a what if scenario in which they could not fix the crystal heart

The alternative bad ending of "The crystalling"
Despite the shortlived relieve the crystalling brought. It took not long for the crystal hard to fall apart again. With no restoration spell able to restore it. The last princess of the Crystal Empire, Mi Amore Cadanza, saw no other choice than to fully evaquate the empire and lead on the exodus of they crystal ponies towards the Equestrian border. A long perilous path through the same frozen wastelands that have swallowed their empire whole.

One dragon... Just one dragon would've made this a fantastic picture instead of a frustrating and unfulfilling one.
Then again, drawing Spike would've implied that he's actually part of Twilight's family, or that he's associated with the Crystal Empire in some way, and who could possibly take that shit seriously?
edit: My interpretation is that Spike decided to take up permanent residence in the Crystal Empire, and the whole fucking province just picked up and moved somewhere else.

My turn on an idea! No war, quite the opposite.
Ahem:
'In the spirit of friendship with their new allies to the north, the Yaks of Yakyakistan had invited the royal family of the Crystal Empire in response and kindness for the reception and great effort that the ponies put to making Prince Rutherford and his party feel welcome.
'Knowing that the Royal Family had just celebrated the birth of their new daughter (and alicorn!), Princess Flurry Heart, they also wanted her to attend as well, but was willing to wait until the filly was old enough to make the journey.
'Now as a young filly, Flurry Heart and the whole family (including the Royal Aunt, Twilight Sparkle) make their way to Yakyakistan, with the Royal Guard mixed in with various Crystal Ponies who were chosen by the Yaks and many of the common citizens who volunteered.'
That's my suggestion anyway, feel free. The illustration was great! I like how Shining Armour got a little chin-scruff! Such a handsome daddy stallion!

Oh, didn't see the ponies in the BG XD.
New theory; Equestria is under attack from an enemy the likes of which nopony has ever seen, and this is an evacuation effort to get as many ponies out as possible before The Final Battle.
Also, they would need a whole caravan for the Starswirl mission. Think about it.
