So that's what a punk's skull looks like! I always wondered how they manage to keep the hair so straight and pointy. Thanks you for finally lifting the veil from one of life's great mysteries

Hey, I was wondering, how did you get started with sculpting? It always seemed like an awesome art form to me, especially since I very much admire the works of classical Greek and renaissance sculptors.

It was a dark and stormy night... Not really I don't remember the weather conditions, but thats how Snoopy starts all his greatest stories and lets face it, Snoopy is awesome.

Ok so I was watching Pirates of the Carribean, the second one, and I thought "hmm I wonder how they make all that awesomeness" So then I decided to find out so I researched it and then I thought "If they can do it then I can do it, why do THOSE people get to have awesome careers and not me?" So i found a film varsity and studied film makeup and production design.

Part of my course was sculpting, because you have to sculpt all those creatures and then turn it into the fake skin that they put on the actors to get them to look all monstery like that. Anyway I just happened to be good at the sculpting part so I decided to focus on that and see where it takes me.

The End

Snoopy most certainly is awesome and a dark, stormy night is the perfect setting, at least for this particular sculpture.

The PotC movies have some great creature effects, makes sense they would inspire you.

Thanks for taking the time and answering

of course If you are considering getting into sculpting however I suggest just getting some clay and tools and seeing what you can do. Varsity just exposes you to that world and the moulding process. They can't however teach you the talent. If you are really serious about it I will give you as many tips as I can. You should check out my website, I write about every step I take to complete each sculpture. I also include mistakes I've made and lessons I've learnt along the way. For the best armature building you should look on my site under Hylonome. Then Quite a few lessons can be learnt from Medusa.

You know what? I'm going to do just that. I'm kinda neck deep in exams now (it's the final semester til I get my bachelor's) but in a week or so I'll get some clay and see where it takes me! It's awesome of you to be so helpful, I checked out your site and I can see there's plenty of material to learn from Even if I terminally suck at it, at least it'll be therapeutical since I love working with my hands.

You welcome best of luck with your exams. The best sculptors clay is Chavant, its kinda pricey but its a must have if you are really serious about it. You want a non drying clay. Thanks so much for checking out my site. Oh and never give up, there were stages where I really believed I couldn't do it but I kept going and hey it worked out for me.

MissBambikins In reply to Infinitechaos12 [2011-04-27 06:32:08 +0000 UTC]

I sculpted the entire thing out of clay then made a silicone and fiberglass mould for it, removed the clay and then swirled the chemical called elastomer into it. Its like a kind of plastic. The chemical sets really hard and its not fragile so i can drop it and it wont break. this was made a hollow shell. I then filled this with a chemical two part foam. This fills out the hollow inside and sets all spongy.

Hahahaha ok here's the explanation. I am actually known for being cute with the heart of a child... a really young child. The only reason I did the skull is because it was a varsity project and the brief was "make a scary monster head" I'm really not a dark person at all. In fact I struggled with this project because I didn't want to do something that would scare me since it I have to take it home with me. To this day my sculpture is not even allowed in my room for that exact reason hehehe
