Description I originally intended him to just be holding the sign, but because Adachi is just so frumpy looking he ended up looking like a hobo, standing on the street corner asking for money.

Except that sign says nothing of the sort. And I'm not going to tell you WHAT it says, so look it up yourself. I'll give you a freebie: the fisrt kanji is ame or "rain." Yeah.

I'm actually pretty proud of the way this came out, I may color it someday... Seems kinda boring to color, though... but I could always add a background... >.> Anyway, enjoy. There was more drawings on the page I drew this on, but I had to crop this part so as not to spoil and poison your little brains.

Tohru Adachi belongs to Shigenori Soejima and ATLUS

Oh no, I didn't make him up. He's from the video game Persona 4, he's a detective. I just drew him... sorta looking like a hobo xD

Well... before *spoiler* maybe... XD

(*totally has a friend who is a fangirl of all aspects of him, though. XD*)

Oh man, have you seen the Japanese version of the scene right before Magatsu Inaba? *shudders* Its WAY better than the dub version. Adachi's seiyuu is SOOOOO much creepier than his actor. There is a user on youtube named MasterLL who has a full playthrough of the Japanese version of Persona 4, I recommend it. Naoto's voice is far better, too. And Teddie's voice actually differs between his "mascot" form and human form. XD

I honestly generally like dubs better, but I like both Adachi actors because I'm familiar with their other work. ^^

I'm a fan of originals, but my Japanese isn't good enough to understand most things. I can get the gist of many spoken conversations, but I'm almost hopeless when it comes to text.

Even good dubs (which P4 honestly is) bother me because some things are just impossible to translate. The best example I can quote comes from Yu-Gi-Oh! (not a good dub, but for things that even a good dub could not have translated) and relates to Bakura and Yami no Bakura/Dark Bakura. It actually works for Yuugi and Yami no Yuugi/Dark Yuugi too, but the example is more extreme in the case of the former.

Ahhh... see, I'm one of those people who gets annoyed at people for bashing dubs and getting mad at people for liking them. I'm all for the original Japanese, but for English audiences watching in English is sometimes nice? Nicer than having to read everything you're watching instead of paying attention to the action...

I think it's weird that I, being someone who has four years Japanese under her belt, am not adamant about sub over dub. I think it's because I've translated a few things on my own and realize the pains a lot of translation groups go to to capture the feeling of the words, even if they can't match it exactly... Lol this is a subject I'm passionate about, so if you get me started... (well I guess I already got myself started, but I'll shut up for now. And as for Yu-Gi-Oh! while it was a not-very-good dub, it was all I had when it was out and it's nostalgic for me, so I still <3 it ^^" )

I used to be a dub basher. Now I accept that some dubs do as good a job as possible with a language. I still bash the bad dubs (*cough*4Kids*cough*) and just about anything brought to america "for kids" is badly edited. But I still prefer to watch the Japanese version.

The example I'm speaking of (you know Japanese, so I don't have to explain this as much) involves Bakura and Yami no Bakura. Bakura speaks very politely. He uses proper grammar and whatnot, and his self pronoun is "boku". Yami no Bakura is pretty much as rude as one can get with the Japanese language. The only pronouns he uses for others are "kisama" and "temee" (depends on the situation) and the pronoun he uses for himself is "oresama". Those kind of things can NOT be translated.

Yuugi and Yami no Yuugi had it to a lesser extent. Yuugi speaks politely and uses "boku" while Yami no Yuugi speaks more casually/rudely and uses "ore" as his self pronoun. Those kind of things they can attempt to translate, but its very hard to get just how insanely rude Yami no Bakura speaks. I mean, "oresama" is just... wow dude. XD

Wow, you've taken Japanese courses. So are you fluent at all? I'd love to find someone who is able/willing to help me with mine. I'm so far mostly selftaught. Right now I'm trying to focus a bit more on the written language. I own a bunch of Japanese manga (most of it is Yu-Gi-Oh! XDD I can tell you where I get my Japanese manga from if you like) and would love to be able to read it without spending hours on a page. *sweatdrop*

MissTooni In reply to galacticpink [2010-02-03 16:34:43 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I totally know what you're talking about with the Yu-Gi-Oh! thing. I think for me, it's a matter of which voices I like better... or which I saw first? Like Trigun, I don't think I could ever watch it in Japanese just because I loved the English SO MUCH... With manga, though, since I work on my own on translating it, I get annoyed sometimes. Like the translated version of Gin Tama toned down a lot of jokes and suggestive references...

I'm not fluent, no, but I can read a great deal. Some kanji I'll still need to look up (having a kanji dictionary is amazing if you don't have one), and I can't read it AS quickly as I read English, but I'm getting there. I could help, definitely. ^^ I have a place for getting Japanese manga, too (fortunately there's a nice little Japanese bookstore in my town, even if it is a bit of a drive). When I translate manga, I (or I used to) put mini sticky notes over the word bubbles with translations so I could come back to it later and reread it, or so I could let my friends read it.

Ahaha, I think one of the reasons I'm more tolerant of translations and dubs is that that's the line of work I'd like to go into. Voice-acting and translating for anime and video games... aside from animation, which is my major.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

galacticpink In reply to MissTooni [2010-02-03 19:39:44 +0000 UTC]

Well, you're gonna have to put up with a lot of BAD dubs in that line of work. Deity help you if you go to work for 4Kids. D: Very cool on the animation, my plan is to go to college for graphic art with a minor in Japanese studies (language, culture, etc). Video games, at least now, get FAR better treatment than anime. You'll be okay there. XD I can list of some examples, although two of them are Atlus (Yay Persona?) and they make some of the best localized games EVER. Not counting the Persona2 fiasco, but that was more American censorship than Atlus. I think we would have gotten both P2 games had Atlus had their way. Stupid Hitler being resurrected. XDDD

Oh, I do have a kanji guide! Its GREAT! It would be even better if I knew how the hell to find a kanji's radical. Figuring out stroke numbers is hit and miss too. As for stickypads, I don't like doing that to my manga. *sweatdrop* - But I've got a site I plan on posting the translations on so I can always look it up. I should probably make a richtext version of the translations should people want to print them out...

My kanji guide is out of print iirc. Kodansha's Compact Kanji Guide. It only covers the Jouyou/Joyo kanji, but you really don't need more than that. In manga, on the odd chance you run into a non Jouyou kanji they'll give you the furigana above it. In fact, shounen and shoujo manga (which tends to be where my interests fall) will put furigana above MOST kanji. They understand 8-12 year olds don't know a lot of complicated kanji. XD

So yeah, I wouldn't know where to start. I can give you the resources I struggle through if you like. And maybe you could help me in trying to find the radicals in kanji so I can look them up more easily?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MissTooni In reply to galacticpink [2010-02-03 22:08:07 +0000 UTC]

Lol I wouldn't work for 4Kids, I'm actually planning on trying to intern for Atlus's translation team. They've got applications online, but I still need a bit more experience. I'm more fond of games than I am of anime in the first place, so I would definitely try to work on localization for video games. ^^

Ah, yeah, finding radicals can be hard, especially because some of them look like they have multiple ones... And lol my sticky notes are gentle, if you peel them out it doesn't hurt the book at all... The lame thing is by the time I finished a couple of my translations - with the intent of submitting them to online sites - the manga already had translations up on the sites. And yeah, a lot of the manga do have furigana, which is very helpful, but the words aren't always in a regular Japanese-English dictionary. ^^" My Kanji dictionary... has over 14,000 kanji in it. I rarely run across ones I can't find in here...

I am too lazy to translate this but it looks cute anyway. Damn you're so good at drawing both creepy Adachi and adorably stupid Adachi.

(Don't tell anyone but when I saw the name of this picture I kinda expected him to be wearing a blue beanie and have stubble.)

Y'think so? Gee, thanks. ^^ Oh, and I'll give you the translation, but don't tell anyone, okay? This is our little secret! (Lol I sound like a creeper): says "rain + night = fog = " which incidentally has also become part of my signature - right below the quote from you, in fact.

I was sorely tempted to draw him with stubble and a blue beanie, actually...

Well, then, maybe I'll just have to do that for you...

I draw all the time in class. In our art history class we were learning about Greek statues (Hermes and Aphrodite statues~! And they wuz nekkid... D so I drew them in my sketchbook, then gave them swimsuits, then turned them into Akihiko and Mitsuru... I'm just crazy like that.

Also, this is silly, but I keep staring at the happy face on the sign. Something about it makes me really happy.

I know! It's so cute, right? I was telling my friend... it only really makes sense if you've beaten the game. If you can read Japanese it could be construed as spoilers, I guess...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MissTooni In reply to BansheeCat [2009-06-05 20:32:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I think so. whenever you run into him he's always wondering what kind of food is cheap and stuff. Like this "Huh... Cabbages are cheap, right? I guess tonight's dinner will be cabbage-centric, then." (actual line from the game)

BansheeCat In reply to MissTooni [2009-06-05 20:36:52 +0000 UTC]

Aww, just like Gumshoe. Well, maybe not quite as bad, if he gets to have cabbage and not just instant noodles.

MissTooni In reply to BansheeCat [2009-06-05 20:38:43 +0000 UTC]
