Description I have converted yet another tutorial, this time from Photoshop to GIMP (of course). This was a very good tutorial on how to make starry universes with nebulous looking clouds. Converting this one had me stumped a few times, but I think I got pretty close!

The original was by *BronzeHalo and can be found here: [link]

If you have any questions feel free to ask, and I'll try to help you out. More importantly show me what you made!

Sorry it's low of image quality, but my computer is slow, I had to go for jpeg and not the png because a 4 MB tutorial would take forever to upload for me. You still should be able to learn though.

Thanks to *BlueRiftValley for introducing me to this tutorial as well.

EDIT

If you want more defined clouds with sharper colors try
going to Script Fu/Actions/Color Effects/Vibrant Colors
or
to Script Fu/Actions/Color Effects/Lime Exposure
-from *BlueRiftValley

Oh, and btw, my most popular deviation is another tutorial I did to get the typography effect for you pictures, you can check that out by clicking here

When i clicked 'okay' after doing the difference clouds, the clouds showed up for about a split second then went back to no clouds. I kept doing the steps thinking that is whats supposed to happen but I couldn't get the clouds back. any advice?

Did you repeat the step for the difference clouds? You're not likely to see changes if the step isn't repeated. I'll try to recreate your problem tonight to see if I can fix it.

oh I forgot to do the Solid Noise clouds. Okay it worked great [link] I really like the look but how did you get the different colored/tie-dye looking clouds that you have?

Ah! I'm glad it worked out.

I got the different colors by making more than one layer of clouds and using the colorization option to adjust the colors of each layer. I also changed the layer modes around.

My stars always show up red and I don't know why. HSV noise makes them red, not the clouds, BTW.

When using the HSV Noise filter you have to make sure you don't change the Hue too much because that will cause your stars to have color.

But, as you can see, I resolved the issue.

Okay, I fixed it. If you use version 2.6-
After making your BG black,
♥ Create a new layer and fill it with white
♥ Perform the 'HSV Noise' Filter
♥ Colors->Invert
And there's your stars!

Just as an FYI, I was playing around with the way you do this, and I took the picture I made here: [link]

But by going to Script Fu/Actions/Color Effects/Vibrant Colors I got this: [link]

And by going to Script Fu/Actions/Color Effects/Lime Exposure I got this: [link]

Just wanted to show ya.

Wow! That's so neat. It makes look a lot more defined.

Did you do this after you completed all the steps, or somewhere in between? And do you mind if I add it to the description for if other people want to try it out?

If I'm correct... I believe the cloud layers should be filled with black, or some other dark color before applying the "Difference Clouds" filters. This wasn't mentioned, but I was assuming this because of the "Color to Alpha" filter applied to the cloud layer that allows the stars to show through.
Is this correct?

Missvirginia In reply to Geosammy [2012-05-07 00:37:48 +0000 UTC]

When you do the Solid Noise cloud render, it automatically makes it black and gray/whitish. I did not fill the cloud layer with a different color before applying the Solid Noise and/or the Difference Clouds, but feel free to try it out and see what happens.
