Description I was lurking in the annual Classic Car festival in Dorado, Puerto Rico months ago when all of a sudden i find this next to a friend's DeLorean. of all things, i was actually hyped that i've finally seen one. This is a 1968 Subaru 360, FHI's first Mass Produced car after the Subaru 1500 (P1), which was a Prototype sedan that was limited to 20 units, all of them used as Taxis in Showa era Japan.

These were the very first Subaru sold to the North American market albeit most were sold in the Pacific Northwest besides California. We all know what happened afterwards with both Consumer Reports labeling the car as unfit for US Roads, unsafe based on its sheer size and Malcolm Bricklin having to dump a ton of the US spec 360's in the Pacific ocean. They also sold them in several body types, including a van variant called the Sambar 360 and a Wagon. this is the Custom sedan.Β Β

Contrary to popular opinion, the 360 was actually known as the "Tentomushi" (Ladybug in Japanese) besides being constantly compared to the VW Beetle. It was powered by its namesake 360cc 2 stroke inline 2 engine powering the rear wheels. it's actually really light as well, with a curb weight of around 935 lbs and is no smaller than half a side by side or a Golf Cart. In Japan, this was one of the cars that placed post-war Japan in 4 wheels and its regarded as the people's car to the point it's an icon; especially the Young SS, its "Hot Boy" variant.

The owner of this very Subaru also has a ton of other bubble era cars and is an Engineer by trade. he picked this one from New York and worked on restoring every single part of this little Subaru, including the custom made interior upholstery.

These are the most rare of cars these little guys tend to be driven to death. Worse people are catching on that one day their Civic or prelude are hot items if they have low miles. I saw a 93 prelude going for 12k as it had only 53000 miles. Lord only knows what the price of this would be.

Considering people will pay over 20 large for a very mint Isetta or a similar Bubble car, they have their Niche market. Same with old Japanese cars as of late, people are finally catching on with their value nowadays.

It's a blessing and a curse.

Damn, what trim? i know the Majesta models bring a premium; more with the 1JZGTE engine. Ironic, since the Japanese sell them for dirt cheap.

Yeah, it really made that car show for me. I came there expecting the usual suspects but that 360 came out of nowhere.

They sold them mostly in the West Coast, this one however ended up in New York before it came to PR. Malcolm Bricklin ended up importing the Yugo besides the SV-1 Sports car he built.
